Default Radiator Overflow/Fill Tank Leak ?

I have noticed lately that there is a small red residue on the top lip of my Radiator Overflow/Fill tank lip near my engine.

No apparent leaks at hose or cap. Also no apparent leak down side of tank or at seam of tank.

The tank holds pressure and temperature reaches over 226 F sometimes. Guess this means no air/pressure leaks.

What gives, any ideas?

You got me. Seems like the only places it could leak would be the hose or the cap, unless you have a crack in the tank somewhere.

I did a search, seems the nipple on the tank leaks (which is right above the tank lip), I will check that out.

Default Found leak

Yep, I found the leak, it was the nipple on the top of the tank. I looked at it after driving the car, and bent it and it leaked. Must be a tiny leak, but will get another tank.

I replace my tank for the same reason but I still have a coolent smell.

My level has not gone done at all. Driving me crazy trying to find it. All is dry under the hood that I can see.

I am going to try to patch the leak, using a "Water Weld" epoxy. I know others have tried and failed, but I just want to try.

Mine worked for a day or two. Epoxy and carbon fiber filler.

I have fixed cracks in my motorhome water tanks with a fibrous epoxy kit, that I don't remember the name of. It is in most rv shops and sets up in 7 min. so you have to be quick. Just a thought if your first attempt goes bad. Make sure you clean the tank with mineral spirit or alcohol.

A patch is a temp fix unless we are talking about a washer tank or something of the same. A coolant tank is a different animal and should never be patched at any cost.

I fixed mine some 10k miles ago and it has not leaked since. I cleaned and roughed up the surfaces, used plastic weld on the crack and then coated it all with marinetex (epoxt based product that is used for repairing boat huls, etc... and is rated for use above and below the water line). The color of grey marinetex is almost a dead match for the tank so it doesn't stand out... Note that I did buy a new tank to fix it right, but needed the car right away and so tried what I thought had the bets chance of fixing it... so far so good...

Hope this is helpful to someone
