Start by checking your battery. Chances are excellent that it is low or bad, or the battery connections are loose or corroded. Need to use a DMM directly across the battery posts with the neg battery cable disconnected and the voltage measurement needs to be greater than 12.5 volts. Your dash gages CANNOT tell you the state of health of the battery. By the way the car will start with as little as 12.2 volts but the electronics in the column lock system requires greater than 12.5volts to function correctly.
I agree that you need to read the first two pages of the Column Lock FAQ stickey and then the last dozen or so pages. (not posts, pages). By then you will then know exactly what else you should consider doing to prevent the problem in the future.
charged the battery, took it up to auto store for a check. Said it was showing 13 volts. Put it back and got same response. Checked my records and recall 01044 was done in 07/01. Guage on car said 11.4 volts, when car fired, went up to 13. Thinking i should try a new battery, b4 calling a tow to GM dealer.

Check your PM's.
Does the car stall if you try to move it or is the column just locked?
At least yours died in your driveway! Mine locked up at the grocery store yesterday. I've been rolling the dice too long. I knew it was coming, just been to lazy to order the CLB. I called GEICO because I've got free towing. Told the guy that I have a lowered Corvette and will require special equpt to get it on a flat bed. He called and said he talked to the tow truck driver and said he knew what he needed and would have planks. He gets there with nothing but a flat bed truck. Took over an hour to get the car on the truck.....when we got it to my driveway I got out a couple long boards and had it off the truck in 2 min.
Anyway, called Corvettes of Houston today and my CLB is on the way. No Vette for a week in perfect driving weather....sucks.... Hopefully I won't be one of the guys with complications from this.....plug and play is the way I like it.
Keep in mind if you have a tune on your car you want to stay away from the dealer.....

Isn't that what the cig lighter thing is for? At least thats what the lady at corvettes of Houston told me. I've skimmed the sticky. If I run into problems Ill read closer. Way too long to read it all...
Yeah...please replace your battery first....that's what cured mine last year...a skid truck ride to the dealership, and a day at the service department, only to have them replace the battery.

I wouldn't think you are out of the woods just yet. It will more than likely still lock up. They had a recall, so check with your dealer that yours is under that. Even still then, I highly highly suggest that you order and install the column lock bypass which will prevent your steering wheel from locking up again...ever.
