Hello everyone-
My key fob just died on my 2001 A4 vert. I tried a new battery in the unit (2032 button type) but is still not working. Called the dealership and they said would be around $135 to replace just one!!! Are there ANY other lower cost options for me???? Money is tight right now and I would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance-
Try the retrain procedure first. If you do need to replace the remote, try a place called www.keylessremotesonline.com. I got a spare (car came with only one) from them for about $45 as I recall. I use it as my primary and it has worked fine for 3 years.
Wow! Thanks for all the quick responses!!! So last question is- if I get the aftermarket fob, do they come programmed or do I have to pay the dealer to do that? Excuse me if the question is dumb! Thanks in advance!!!
There is no programming of the FOB. You program the car.
Programming Transmitters
1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Turn the radio to OFF.
3. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC warning messages.
4. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
5. Press and hold the RESET button for 3 seconds.
6. Press the OPTIONS button until FOB TRAINING message is displayed.
7. Press the RESET button in order to begin the programming sequence. The message HOLD LK + UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed.
8. Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the first transmitter for 15 seconds. The IPC will indicate when that transmitter is programmed and when to proceed to the next. Repeat this procedure for each additional transmitter or press the OPTIONS button to exit.
You guys are AWESOME!!! Just saw on another thread about the retraining of the fob thru the DIC. Appreciate the info though. I checked out keylessremotesonline.com and I think I will use them. $43.95 and shipping a reasonable $5.95. Sure beats the $135 the dealer quoted me. Thanks a bunch guys--as always I APPRECIATE the FORUM !!!

I bought fob 1 and 2 from eBay for 39 bucks for 2, And they are new GM fobs. Work great.
I just got a used Fob off of ebay for 10 bucks. Used but in great condition. I would say shop around and you can pick one up cheap. From what I remember there were several deals like that on ebay when I was looking.
You may want to check the battery boot (unit that holds the battery in FOB). Mine would work intermittently for a while and then died. Researched a little and found that there is a chance that the soldered connection at the circuit board could crack and lose connection. Mine had this crack so I resoldered and it has worked great for the past couple of months. Could be a cheap fix if you have a soldering kit or know of someone with one.
