Currently have auto-dim with map lights. Need to replace windshield due to crack and seems like the time to add a compass mirror if it can be done without running a new wiring harness.
Most recent posts I found were mid-2009; all required new harness. Anyone found a replacement that just plugs into stock wiring?
Thanks!
Yes, that's the Gentex mirror that requires running a whole new harness.
Hard to believe no one has just put a compass in an otherwise stock dimming mirror with map lights so you could just plug it into the stock harness!
I guess nothing has changed since the 09 posts.
I finally found the Gentex that HAS the maplights AND Compass AND temperature AND garage door opener! I had searched for 2 years for this style, and finally got it on the auction site. Gentex stopped making this model several years ago,and they are so hard to find!
I was looking for one that had a compass and homelink but settled on a new one from a forum member that had compass and tempeture. It did require a lot of wiring to run the temp sensor as well as getting the map lights to come on with the dome light like the stock one. Good upgrade though in the end.

I'm surprised these aren't plug and play. Why the need for a separate harness if the OEM mirror is already autodimming and has the electrical feed.
I checked into these mostly for the homelink option, however I also want to install a fixed (non suction cups) radar detector mount and my whacky OEM stock mirror mount prevents it as most manufacturers of these radar detector mounts need the typical round windshield connecting post.
I was willing to pay the $$$ if I got everything I wanted from the mirror, however it appears they don't offer the model any longer.

I agree, it's nuts to have to re-wire!
BTW, If you have a Valentine detector Google "Great Lakes Trophy" for a custom mount that fits our cars. There is a slightly noticeable increase in mirror vibration due to the weight of the detector hanging there, but you get used to that almost immediatly.
