The wifes 03 AE needs shocks. It has the magnetic selective ride option. Any idea how much these run as opposed to standard shocks and is this something I can do myself? Thanks.
I just paid $400 ea for the front shocks last week. You will have to compress them with tie wraps before you do the install, no problem. Be careful removing the connector at the top of the shocks, push on the spring and they come right off, there is a groove cut at the top of the shock to keep the connector on.

Here are a couple of recent posts about the magnetic shocks that you might find helpful:
In the second one the OP has 3 that were still good for sale cheap if you want to stay with the magnetics. If it were me I would ditch the magnetics. 4 new C6Z06 shocks are less expensive than the 3 used magnetic ones but you have to get someone with a Tech II to turn off the F55 per the instructions in the first link.
One thing you might check, some owner's think their shocks are bad when the shock stuffers were never removed at delivery. That makes the ride harsh and all that is needed is to pull the covers back and pull out the shipping stuffers.

Happened to me.
Who told you, or what indication do you have that they are bad?
Maybe my paranoia or bad history with a few mechanics, but suppose a mechanic needed them for HIS Corvette and YOURS are just what he needs. He sells you new ones and keeps yours. I ain't sayin' Ahm jus' sayin' y'know?

I think I would do that before spending big $$$s on the magnetic shocks.

Sadly, this happens more often than one would think. Worth a look to see if the stuffers are still there.

Are you sure a 7 year old car needs NEW shocks???
I just replaced my originals on my 99 for c6 shocks but the ones I had were still nearly mint. If they are not leaking and the car can't be bounced when you push on the 4 corners of the car then you are being fleeced.
The option your wife has is a serious upgrade. Make certain that they actually need replacing

Not positive, but the car has 106k on it. Lots of miles for an 03, but its a driver; definitely not a garage queen. Thats an option; putting Z06 shocks on it instead
The magnetic shocks are not going to wear out like conventional shocks. The self-adjusting feature is what also makes them last longer. They do not function like conventional shocks.

Once they start leaking fluid (they will and do) they are just as done as any conventional shock..........
I also have a 2003 (recently purchased) with quite a stiff ride. When I took it to the dealer for winterization and the car was up in the hoist I notice the four yellow tabs that indicated to me that the stuffers had not been removed. My wife really loves the ride now. It makes a big difference.
Quite a few people with this situation have added the resistors recently and then purchased the C6 Z06 shocks. It is a much lesser expensive alternative! If you're interested in some shocks, let me know!
