Yesterday I was unable to dodge a hunk of metal that fell off of a truck. Went under and ripped out part of oil pan an filter. Dumped the oil in a matter of seconds.

Repair bill $1,900.
Hate hearing of these stories. Best of luck on the fix
The car can be fixed...A guy here in PA wasn't so lucky. The 2 lb pipe fitting bounced, went right thru the windshield, struck him in the face and killed him.
Get the car fixed and count your blessings.
Sadly that IS NOT a no fault accident and the insurance company will treat it like a collision acident (you will be at fault). How do I know ? Same thing happened to me coming back from KY. blew out the oil pan and had to leave my car at a repair shop and pick it up the next weekend. It only cost me 490.00
Had the same thing happen a while back to my Camaro Z28. The strap wratchet on a semi trailor went under my car and destroyed my oil pan and many other parts. Exterior didn't have a scratch.
Yeah I'm sorry for your damage. I know this sounds crazy, but when a truck is in 15th gear and hauling a$$ I back off, maybe a mile or so. The guy who was killed on RT.95 in Pennsylvania that one of the other posters mentioned happened about two miles from here. To make the worse is that he had his two children with him, but when the scrap iron metal flang came off the overloaded truck going in the opposite direction it hit his windshield at about 80MPH and took off he head completely. Ever since then I always think about how those children feel and of course the fact that they'll never be the same again.
Just last sprig a Tractor Trailer failed to see traffic was cloged ahead of him and when he hit the brakes it was way too late. He killed one and injured 5 more. The PA state troopers went over the truck from bumper to bumper. They found that the brake system on the truck was in such bad shape that even if had seen the stopped traffic he'd of never been able to stop. After the investigation they found six other worn out brake system parts as well and a illegal PA stste inspection stickers on the truck. OH, it was overloaded as well.
Truck triver was given a year in jail and lost his license. The company he worked for was raided by the State police and all records were confiscated and the police took each truck sitting on the property and the others as they came in from the days work. Out of 16 trucks, 12 were labeled as not roadworthy and 4 were in bearly passable condition. A few years ago I was on the expressway in the right hand lane when I just bearly saw the crank for the landing gears or uprights fall off.
I was in my Monte Carlo and I saw it bounce so I swerved to the right and hit the brakes and the damn thing just grazed my windshield right hand moulding putting a nice big dent, but it didn't braek my windsield. Of course by now the truck was long gone. I really said my prays that night. Trucking companies push the vehicles and hire drivers without a legit license or they hire Gyspy drivers and figure, Hat if anything goes wrong it's on the drivers. Whom most often don't even have Insurance, or even a legal papers for the damn load that in the truck. All the police can do is take them to court, but the damage is done already. What if your children were hurt because of this criminal trucking Co. ?
I drive (mostly expressway) about 150 miles a day. I can't begin to tell you how many things I have seen fly off trucks and come off cars. The scariest thing I drove through was on 696. There is a section of road that has three short tunnels for roadways that cross above them. When West bound the last one is curved and the longest. Just before the start of it the car in front of me blew a motor (or whatever). Cloud of smoke so thick you couldn't see through it. Too much traffic to stop so I just tapped the brake and drove by memory. Seemed like a long time but it only lasts for a couple of seconds. I said a lot of prayers that day.
These SoCal Freeways have truly become war-zones... I recently had to dodge a Surfboard which flew off a truck!!
And yesterday, on my Harley, I hit a driveshaft (glancing blow) which was lying in the road (car ahead swerved, nicked it, and sent it spinning toward me)...
And I always stay way-back from pickups, trucks, etc.--and STILL have too many close calls...
I used to say "you can't drive anything nice in SoCal"--but as I've aged I've mellowed a bit...
