After reading several posts regarding “what is the best shifter” I have decided to go with the Hurst shifter. How many of you installed the shifter yourself vs. having it professionally installed. I’m not too worried with the install because my brother, who happens to live next door, is a certified mechanic, so I’m sure he would lend a hand if I got into too much trouble. How easy/difficult has it been for all of you?
I was planning on getting a red boot (sized correctly) to replace the black one because I have the modified red interior. Where can I find one?
It was very easy if you have the right tools. getting the shift **** key out was the hardest part, but there are several threads on here that will tell you how to do it. I used a pair of channellocks, paint stick and the biggest pry bar I have in my tool box. It came right out. I did everything pretty slowly by the instructions. But it would be easier the second time around. And remember to use the supplied blue loctite when the shift stops are tightened down! That way they won't come loose and you won't get stuck in fourth gear! :mad
install is a gag! Anyone with simple hand tools can do it. As for the red boot contact Ken King at http://www.vettessentials.com and he can hook you up with a super high quality boot. He makes them to accomodate a short shifter so let him know what you have. I have both the shifter and one of his boots and love them both.
If you follow these, you will have no problems http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/pat...rInstall.shtml I never had anything but the Hurst instructions and I had no problem at all. In fact the second time I did it (I went back in to lock tight the "stop" nuts) I was in and out in 18 minutes!
