My only experience is the stock shifter and the RSD Snap shifter I found and researched here and installed in my Z. There wasn't anything I disliked about the stock shifter other than the throw distance and the RSD shifter exactly solved that problem. It decreases the throw by roughly a third and firms up the effort by about the same because of losing some mechanical leverage in the length of the stick. Aside from that all else seems equal as before. I've heard complaints of others rattling and or being notchy but the RSD has none of those issues.
If a rattling shifter will be a concern you might look at the B&M Sport Shifter instead of the Ripper or Hurst. The Sport shifter has a two piece shaft w/ some isolation built in. It is a significantly shorter throw over stock, and feels pretty good in my 02 Z. You can often find them used for pretty cheap in the for sale section too. They also work w/ either C5 ***** or the stock C6 shift ****. I added the C6 **** not long ago and love it...
I like this Sport Shifter alot better than the Ripper I had in my '99 TA before this. The noise was starting to get to me there.
I have to admit I would like to try a MGW or a C6 Hurst model (shaft is bent back torward you) too though to have a direct comparison...

Having had the MGW (short threaded shaft) for over a month now, I absolutely love it. Granted I've only ever known it and the stock shifter but it solved every problem I had with the stock one. One item perhaps worth mentioning about the mgw is the offset of the shaft. You can tighten the shaft down onto the lower base of the shifter so that the offset is pointing any way you'd like. (If you go to mgw's site and look at the design, you will see what I mean) I did a little experimenting with positioning it, and while the offset is only about a half an inch that can translate into an entire inch of difference if twisted 180*. At first I tightened it down in the 6 o'clock position. After messing with it for a day I settled for 12 o'clock position and, to me, it made all the difference. I have long arms and am extremely finicky with my driving and controls position. I was able to perfect the shifter with the mgw design, and it also changed the shift effort by changing the leverage point, albeit slightly, but enough to leave me wanting nothing. If you're worried about shift effort I'd try the MGW with the taller threaded shaft and see if that fits your bill.
Now if I could only COMPLETELY change the steering wheel adjustment to include finer increments and telescoping, I'd be in heaven...
DON'T get the B&M Ripper. It rattles and buzzes like crazy. I've posted once that I thought that I had fixed it. Well, it's back. It's driving me NUTS!!! I'm about to do a clutch and cam change and while that's apart I'm going with MGW.

Hate to say it, but the mgw does rattle slightly, at least in my car. However, I wouldn't say it's loud or annoying. It it is just barely there and only under acceleration seemingly above 3000 rpm.
I've had a Hurst in my '01 Z for 10 years and like it. No rattles and provides short, crisp shifts. Maybe others are better but I'm happy with the Hurst.
I have a HURST currently (was in car when I bought it). I have had multiple B&M Rippers and like then all pretty much the same. I find the HURST does deliver more rattle noise than the other ones I have had.
Short Throw shifters are one of the best mods in my book. Just a better driving experience.
I'd have to say that the MGW is the best built and engineered out there. I was lucky enough to get a free tour of their facility this past weekend when I was in Augusta, GA to buy some tires from one of the guys that works at MGW (VNVETT on this Forum). MGW is actually Maryland Gun Works (now relocated) and is a long time maker of precision small parts for law enforcement and target shooters. Their QA/QC is second to none and they apply all the same technology and construction techniques to their shifters as they do to the small arms parts. Truly an amazing piece!!!
Good luck whichever way you go!!
