Default Parking Brake Adjustment

My parking brake hasn't been working right for a few months now, not holding the greatest. So yesterday I jacked up the rear and pulled the tires off. After I removed the calipers and rotors I adjusted the star adjuster and cleanded the parking brake pads with some emory colth. I now have my parking brake back!! Also on a side note my fuel gauge hasnt been working either after multiple bottles of techron nothing worked. So I unpluged the conector at the sending unit and gently gave the sending unit a few knocks with the end of my ratchet then plugged it back in. After I had every thing back together I jumped in the car for a quick test drive and wouldn't you know my fuel gauge was working!! All in all it was a great productive day.

Good to hear There is a great product called DeoxIt that I used on my left front wheel speed sensor after receiving codes and setting off service traction control messages. After using DeoxIt, I haven't received a front wheel speed sensor code in over a year. Only a few drops were required in the connector and it cleans, lubricate and enhances the electrical conductivity of the plug. Might be some good insurance in the long run.

Radio Shack also has a spray that works quite well on electrical connections. I use it all the time and it works great.

Nice to hear that you've got your parking brake back. I have that on my short list... removing the wheels and cleaning those pads... when I can stop driving it.

I only fill up my '99 with Chevron because it has the Techron additive and for good measure I empty a 20oz container of Techron Concentrate Plus every couple of months... no sending unit problems so far.

Enjoy the ride.

How did you adjust it? Mine works sometimes just depends on the day. Pretty straight forward?

Good job getting the parking brake working again. Nice to have that added measure of safety when parking the car.

Can't it be adjusted at the cable without removing the rear brakes? Mine barely holds on a slight incline.

Nope.

Pull rear wheels
Pull caliper
remove rotor
Adjust parking brake shoe / measure and/or test fit rotor & repeat
Install caliper
Install wheels

Pulling up on the handle in reverse X (most people say 3) # of times will adjust slack in the cable but does not adjust the shoes.

It was pretty easy espically if you have already did the brakes before(getting the caliper bolts off is usually the hardest part the first time) I just jacked the rear of the car up and removed the tires, then the calipers and rotors. After that just spin the adjuster to make the pads expand out. I did it enough so I could feel a little drag when I spun the rotor. It is very easy. My bigest surprise was getting my fuel gauge to work again by just unplugging it from the sending unit and pluging it back in
