Is it hard to get vanity plates? I'm new to this and never knew this could be done. Always wanted this.
At least in Jersey, all you do is goto the DMV and pay a one time $50 fee, the hard part with all the cars in Jersey (I am sure youll face a similar issue in Texas) is finding a plate that is not already taken
Does anyone know of an online availability checker for NJ? I know PA has one
In NJ, here's what I've done. Call DMV and ask for special plates. When you get someone on the phone you can ask if they'll tell you if your choices are taken. They are not supposed to as far as I remember, but if you are lucky you will get someone nice enough to tell you anyway. I've been fortunate when I've tried it to know in advance of sending in the money. Actually now that it has been revamped to become the MVC, I find everything runs alot smoother so you might not have any problems at all finding out.

I hope this MVC change has improved the overall experience. This coming Friday I will be at the MVC to transfer a title, apply for vanity plates, pick up temp. plates, and oh yea REGISTER MY NEW (to me) Z06
