Default Rock plus windshield equals......

a big dammit! A truck picked up a honker of a rock and star'ed the driver's side, just off center of line sight looking ahead. On the way home, I picked up one of those resin glass repair kits.

Worked pretty well. Eh, you can still see the ding, but it's much better. Alas, I have concerns that this will not stop eventual cracking.

Any experience out there with this type of repair?

The only ones I have ever had crack were ones that hit on the edges of the windshield. Not that they can't spread but its been my experience that those in the middle stay as they are.

I caught a rock dead center in the windshield at VIR last year. Had a bullet hold and spider crack about 2" across. My insurance had a glass company come out and do the epoxy resin repair. It fixed about 90% of the problem, and you coulld still see the center of the crack. Much better but not perfect. After about 7 months of driving, the crack is starting to spread again from the edges. I will eventually have to replace the entire windshield.

Had it happen to me in the cross country voyage I made with the Z when I bought it. About a dime size spider web, front center lower area. Had the resin injection done to it while it was parked in my garage. Took 95% of it out and can only see it when the light is just right on it.

Much less painful than I thought is was going to be.

I use to work for a glass company the resin will help it but its only temporary depending on the size of the damage. If you take a picture for me than i can determine if it will crack out or not.

Out of town at the moment. The total spider crack was about 1/2 inch. The hole was about 1/8 inch in diameter. Can't see the spider cracks anymore, but the hole still shows (albeit shallow). Sorta wish it would just go ahead and crack wide. The windshield is pitted all over the place, and one small nick right in my line of sight looking ahead.

Wait, where did I put that ballpeen hammer????

Hahaha I agree get that ball-pin hammer. That resin will hold up buts its only temp cause the first layer of glass is already weaken great chance the windshield will start cracking. Just keep an eye on it. By the way what state you in? Never mind your not in a no fault state which mean no free windshield. Some state (7) give out free windshield cause their a no fault state ever heard of it?

Yup, still have to deal with a $500 deductible. Eh, I'll check with a glass place. The mark up on windshields is rather high (me thinks), and a lot of companies are willing to eat deductibles. I might have to pay something.

You'll find pricing on a Z06 windshield is 2 to 4 times the standard Corvette because it's thinner (saving 7 lbs) and has a "special" film for the HUD. I put in the standard glass and can see only a very slight decrease in HUD sharpness. My guy charged $320 versus dealer quote of $1400.
You can find tons of detailed info and opinions on this great forum.

Yeah their are places that offer less for the glass but if your in a no fault state and pay a detectable, you still dont have to pay anything cause windshield is consider an safety equipment just like your airbag, etc. So basically i'm saying that you will get a new windshield every time you want a new as long as you got a legit damage and their is no limits for replacing windshield. You have can 100 windshield replace in a year if you/feel like you have a legit damage and in a no fault state.
