Er... perhaps you should add "theoretical" in there, Adam. Little things like wind resistance and such not withstanding. :D

Here's what I've seen racing...they are estimates because in SCCA Class T1, we can run 17" rear wheels...and I'm normally looking at the tach to shift, but the speeds are pretty close.

2d - 70 (never maxed out 2d...shift at 6200).
3d - 105
4th - 145-150
5th - I've seen 160, but it should go to 175
6th - slower than that (it's too high for top end running)

I'll give you an update on 5th gear after I get back from Daytona's SCCA National. I'm guessing I'll see somewhere around 165 or so. I saw 160 consistently at Charlotte, and Daytona is faster.

I sell the videos of these tracks and races for $10 each if any is interested in seeing these speeds in anger! :D

Actually those numbers are not theoretical. If you are pulling 6500 RPM in 6th gear, that is the MPH you will be traveling at. Now can you pull 6500 RPM in 6th gear? Hell no, you would need thousands of HP and tons of aerodynamic/suspension/tire enhancements.

Oh, I guess I should add that If you're spinning your tires you might not be traveling at the MPH your speedo says, but I figured that went without saying ;)

Thousands? A C4 did 255 MPH with about 800hp. :yesnod:

Top Speed for the ZO6 with all the limiters deleted would be roughly 185 mph.

Check out these great links for the calculations!

MPH@6500 RPM w/ 295/35 18 tires and 3.42 rear:
<snip>

Adam, we almost exactly agree :)
here are my (slightly more accurate :) ) numbers

at 6500, red line

48.55 mph 1st Gear

69.65 mph 2nd Gear

100.83 mph 3rd Gear

144.18 mph 4th Gear

171.65 mph 5th Gear

at 6600, rev limit

49.29 mph 1st Gear

70.73 mph 2nd Gear

102.38 mph 3rd Gear

146.40 mph 4th Gear

174.29 mph 5th Gear

these, of course, are for a car on new tires, at factory pressure :)
also, with a recent car wash, but no Zaino!

Ah, but my car does have Zaino, thus the discrepancy. I'll look at my formula later tonight and see if an error occured.

5th at 6600 was an indicated 177 in my car. I've been there 3 times. The speedo was checked at 100 mph against a gps and they both indicated 100 mph. My car will not do over 70 in 2nd or 100 in 3rd at the rev limiter at least as shown on the speedo. I suppose there could be some speedo delay and it could be actually traveling a bit faster than indicated. :chevy

Duh... Still in BMW think here. They feel it necessary to protect their customers from their amazing top end performance and super-powers  by limiting top speed with the ECU :yesnod: It's a control thing I think.

What happened to my post to No Cure about top speed? Did the Powers that be delete it?

My questions were if No Cure could calculate the top speed of my Z with:

1. SAE 502rwhp/491rwtrq (through mufflers and cats on 91 octane)?

2. SAE 485rwhp/485rwtrq (cammed down for great idle and smog)?

I have stock tires and stock 3.42 gears.

Even though I probably will never hit this, I am very curious. On the fastest road courses I have been on so far (Willow Springs), the fastest cars are hitting about 160mph at the end of the front straight. I have not had the new motor on the track yet.

Thanks in advance!

my first response was to say "hmmm, that's odd, must be a glitch in the ubb software or sumtin", except, we're both space cowboys :)

Mako,
You have to know more than just the peak HP/Trq number in order to compute the top speed. You have to have the actual dyno graph to see the power@RPM. The reason being that let's say you have a 450 RWHP@6000 RPM car. However, you're geared with stock gears so you redline in 5th gear at 171 mph. Now you shift to 6th gear, but the revs drop so low that you do not have the full 450 RWHP to leverage. See my point?

6600 RPM's in 5th is 175. I weigh 240lbs and if that is slowing my car down 2 miles then I wont biggie size for 2-3 months. Did that speed several times and check out http://www.racingfreaks.net for the videos

Your weight will not affect the top end speed. It just might take a hair longer to get there ... that's all. :D The only factors in play at steady top speed is aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. Of course if a vehicle weighs hundreds of lbs more than another, then the rolling resistance will be slightly higher, but not by much. The aerodrag takes ~95% of the required HP, and the rolling resistance acconts for the remaining 5%.
