What temps are you running at on normal cruise speeds? (45-80)
With my stock thermo (190?) I'm running right at around 189-192
I'm just thinking of getting a 160 thermo and upping the timing couple degrees to see if I can squeeze out 5 horsies or so.
I'll also lower the fans to 190-200ish (depending on what temp you cruise at)
Thanks!
I have an Autozone "alternate" temp thermostat and my engine runs 183 in 6th at highway speeds, and 173-174 in 5th at highway speeds. It gave me 40 extra horsepower!!!!!

Awww, you guys don't believe me?!?!?! Well, I have a desktop dyno that PROVES it!!!!! hahahahahah
But really, the temps and everything are real. And it is a cheap Autozone "alternate temp" thermostat. Very consistent temps. (the difference between gears is do to speed of coolant flow, had the same effect with stock thermo)

What is a alternate temp stat?
Never heard of that.
I run a hypertech power stat aswell I've seen my temp go to 180* on the street with the ac on won't ever go over.I don't know about 40 horses though............
I have to find out about this "alternate" temp thermostat. I have been in the Auto Parts business now 33 years and never heard of it. I was always told that you don't mess with the 195 Degree Stats in the later model vehicles because of polution laws, passing inspection and what have you. Was told that cars that came with 195 degree Stats were made to run with them. Unless something has changed I just don't know about this Alternate Temp Stat as it sounds suspect to me. Does anyone know who the Manufacturer is on this Thermostat? Is there a link online for us to read about it?

yea alternate just means not the factory thermostat rating. That is true unless the computer is adjusted (ie fans, timing) there is no point in changing the thermostat.

"Thanks for the Laugh".... sure seems not too many people know anything about the LSX engine and the fact that its designed to run hotter, thus the Mobil 1, with the specific heat package GM spec. The car is built around a run temp "Sweet" spot, and it isn't a colder temp. Running too cold is just a bad idea. You will take thousands of miles off the longevity of this well designed engine.

Please be a sport and post some actual data with test results about this.
I may be ill-informed thinking that cycling between 190 and 245 is not good for the life or performance of my LS1.
I have a 160 stat and in this weather in an A4 @ highway speeds am running 169* coolant 192* oil.
you do realize that you WANT your oil to get over 212 degrees on a daily basis right. Our oil system in not sealed and condensation gets in. If your oil doesn't get over 212 then the water never boils off.

Yes I know , those are highway temps, in city I am running 210-217* oil and 192* coolant.
