I just recently bought an 02 with 42000 miles and in pristine stock condition in Va. for 15000 from a private owner. Being that yours is at a chevy dealer they are probably asking a bit more than a private owner would. It looks good and I think it is neat that you found one that has not been modded at all. I noticed on the carfax that it had the fuel tank replaced but no other problems. I think if it were me I would make an offer of about 12,500 and be willing to go 13,500 max. Don't forget you have to think about 1000 for tax, and inspection and title work, tags maybe tires or some other start out costs. A buyers market and right time of year to buy. Bill
Thinking of getting into a C5 and found this car. Pretty much base besides the F45 option but the miles are low and the price seems fair. Thoughts?
When you look at it - look in the 'REAR' drivers side compartment panel (Options Codes) and see if it has the "G90 and G92" performance axle, ratio 3.15 if not then it has 2.73's but that can be easilly remedied

I noticed the gas tank too 10k mi ago. That is one of the things about C5 and up that bothers me since the '04 crossover pipe recall these tanks are outrageus$$$ to replace. I like un molested cars too.Too bad it doesn't have the HUD and CD instead of casette but both of those issues can be fixed easy enought. I would assume the F45 works (for now) but is not a selling point to me just like FX3 the shock replacement means disable it I wont pay those prices for the shocks.I plan on trading my C4 and already know I will get raped I am thinking of offering my car and $9k for it. Here in SC tax is capped at $300 one of the good things about buying cars here even new cars are $300. We have personal property taxes on cars though and I just paid mine so it is good for a year.
Sounds like this is the first C5 you are looking at?
Yes it is There are plenty in my Corvette club and I have some basic knowledge of some of the issues you guys have but wondering what it is you would be looking for. Anything specific to the 98 model?

Be sure to check the dual climate controls and FEEL to see if BOTH sides blow COLD, then HOT. Shut the car off for a minute and then RESTART to see if the climate controls "remember" the last settings. My 98 has issues with it's climate control and "I" have to readjust the controls to the last settings everytime!
Check drivers power seat! Make sure it works fine.

See if it's an early or late 98. ABS is up front in the late.
There is one with the same miles, color and price sitting at a dealer close to me in Oregon. It's been there for 6 months. Deal hard.. It's just the beginning of winter!
If the PCM and motor is just like the LS1 in the Camaro then I'd get at least a '99 and up. The PCM is better for tuning, rod bolt issues, the 806 casting heads vs 241, oil pump and block design, etc. I honestly can't remember everything but it's well covered in the "How to build LS1/LS6 Engines."
Thanks Jack but I have the general buyers guide I am looking for C5 specific tips
SFC Rik Check on that will do it
Firefighter I am interested to know more about what you posted for sure anyone else have info on the 99 Corvette LS1 being different than the 98? I know the LT1 in Corvettes and Cameros had some slight differences.
I did some poking around and yes the rod bolts are suspect in the 98 LS1 at higher rpms and the PCM/Harness is different
98 oil pumps were fine. 99s had the problem
98 have 28# injectors 99-00 have 26# 01-02 have 28#
98 has a Distinct harness 99-02 have a common harness
98 pcms are distinct; 99-02 have a common PCM
Getting a 99+ PCM and appropriate wiring harness will allow you more flexibility in tuning the car.
Also later LS1s had a LS6 intake that was better too.
I do not plan on racing or even modding in anyway so is there any reason to shy away from this car?
I would question the oil pressure.
Reading high for being at idler.
Possibly a sending unit replacement.
Not a simple fix due to where the sending unit is located.
Also see if you can see under the battery area for acid spillage.
Early model are know to have bad batteries, acid gets all over the computer and section of frame.
Use a good flashlight and try to see down in there.
You can also look under the car just behind the pass front wheel for corrosion stain on the frame.
This would be a good indicator of battery acids leaking in the past.
