Happened to me 50 miles from the dealer when I picked mine up 5 years ago. I know how you feel.
At first I panicked then I remember reading about it on the forum as a possible issue as I was researching C5 issues. I stopped at the first auto store I saw and bought a couple of bottles of techron add one by the end of my 500 mile trip home and two bottles the sensor was working fine. I now add it every few tank fill ups and never had the problem again,
The sending unit actually doesnt "stick" it simply gets to a spot on the grid where there is a buildup and cannot read the resistance, so the indicator drops to empty.
Without a firm grasp on how this thing worked, I was simplifying the cause from a purely mechanical standpoint. With the pic from Jet-Jock/DeeGee, it becomes clear how this mechanism operates.
When I bought my '98 two years ago, I filled up for the 3-hour ride home. About an hour into the trip my gauge also went to Empty. Silently freaked out and thought I dumped a tankful on the highway. After stopping and a quick inspection revealed nothing, restarting the car cleared the empty tank reading. Twice more on the road the gauge went empty and then back again. Figured it was electrical and would diagnose when home. A search on this Forum yielded the simple solution to the problem. What I thought would be a costly fix turned out to be a $7 remedy. Gotta love the Corvette Forum!
Well I am sure that it not leaking. Another interesting fact is my gas tank was replaced 10km mi ago and I have now verified than my gauge only reads 3/4+ 1/8 when full I assume either the sending unit was either not installed corectly or somehow the computer is reading the signal wrong. Is there a calibration for the units maybe with a tech 2?
Did it again exactly at 3/4 after showing full at 7/8. Wonder if I should refill it to keep working on that bad spot with the Seafoam I put in it or let it run down to empty?
I just had this issue pop up. Pulled the codes and consistently got P0461 both Historic and Current. After I let it sit for a couple hours it went away. I recently had to use some lower grade fuel instead of the 93 Octane I use normally. I am relieved that I don't have to drop the tank or anything. I will run some Seafoam through to try and clean out the cheap gas.

I wasn't aware of the problem at that time, so I was worried myself.
Nice to have a forum for solutions..

Yeah that would be the left side I have a P1431 right side. I would be happier if it were left side because right side is harder to get the cleaner in plus it just worries me about the above link concerning the right pump orfice getting clogged. It IS a $300 part...ahh so what at least I know what it can be If Seafoam/Techron doesn't fix it.
