I went with the Bilsteins sports, Z06 sway bars and poly bushings to stiffen mine up a little because I didn't want to hit the front spoiler. It worked and I don't notice a lot of difference in the ride.
I have Bilstein Sports on my '04 Z. It's a good shock if you want the car to handle. There is a slight compromise in cruising ride quality, but I don't want the ride in my Vette to be mushy.
If you want a soft ride, stay away from them.
Are the stock C5 shocks gas or just oil hydraulic?
To the OP: I have a set of stock FE1 shocks that are in very serviceable condition... free to a good home. I don't want to hassle with shipping though. Depending on where you are in SD, it may or may not be worth your trouble to travel to the OC to come get them. PM me if interested.
I just installed a set of Bilstein HD's but I haven't had a chance to drive the car yet. I was told that the HD's were comparable to the C6 Z06 shocks for ride stiffness. The SP's are much stiffer and are recommended for autocrossing and car lowering.
I had the HD's on my C3 and the car handled great and the ride was not hard. I put C6 Zo6 shocks on my C5 and they ride is just right.
I have had the Bilstein HD shocks on the C5 Z06 for 3 years now. They are a great compromise for my use on the street and track days. Substantially stiffer than the stock shocks but softer than the GM T1 shocks. The ride on the street is stiff but not pound your fillings out of your teeth stiff. They offer great control and don't bounce across pot holes etc.
X2 I've had the HD's for a couple of years now - good compromise between the stock shocks and the stiffer Bilstein Sports.
