I replaced my radiator yesterday and when i started it up the lower fitting on the tranny cooler leaked all over.it is coming out the threads.there is an inverted flare on the cooler hose and the fitting in the tank looks correct. i have repositioned it and retightened to no avail. i purchases a second new radiator and there are o rings in the fittings in the tank why would you need these when a flare should be self sealing.i have not installed it yet but would like to get back at it tomorrow.anyone have any suggestions?
Well,a flare WILL seal if you get it tight enough-but "tight enough" is probably just about the point where the fitting twists out of the radiator, so the "o" rings make it so "really snug" will seal it enough not to leak.
If you use a backup wrench properly on the radiator fitting, you won't have this problem.
As for YOUR leak-make sure there isn't a groove or flat spot on the sealing surface of the fitting on the radiator(take a CLOSE look-the threads don't seal it,the flare does)-it doesn't take much of an imperfection on the fitting to let it leak.
I'm assuming the flare on the pipe from the tranny is ok,since it wasn't leaking before,so if it's not crossthreaded,it almost has to be something wrong with the radiator fitting.
