Default unsatisfied hood choices !!

I need and want a heat extractor hood, BUT....without all the high rise stuff. Here some of the styles I like

but without the damn 60's/70's musle car high rise look. In my opinion it just doesn't flow with the natural ilines of a C5. I understand the practical reasons behind some of the designs of the rise in the hood like a blower or a different manifold choices and ect.. But could anyone design and produce a heat extractor with minimal rise or even flat ?? Like the original C5R look ??

I understand the engineering differences in the C5R vs the street version (engine set back) but come on. I've been doing this (hot rodding) for quit a while and I'm over the promod hood. Everyone seems to make fun of the ricer world when those guys put s**t on the cars that serves not purpose, well what do you call a hood that has 5" clearance between the manifold and the bottom of the hood ?? Anyway back to the question, where is the hood of practicality that provides excellect heat removal and some down force at speed without making the fast and furious casting call ?? Thanks..

I know the air bridge is a big limiting factor, but I'd like to hear it from the horses mouth...(Vendor/manu.)

The first one you posted is the ACP Louvered Air Extractor Hood

Yeah, if I had to choose one that was currently on the market it would be the ACP heat extractor, non-maggie. Here's some pics of it;

But it is still to high for me (as in " not $). Especially for $1500-$2000 when I'm not 100% staisfied. Just look how it rises, I'd like to know how much it actully rises over the stock hood.

Mecham Performance www.mechamperformance.com makes a fairly low rise extractor hood.

BUT, I've heard some problem with thier fitment and you would have to order it without the plenum to get really good extraction. Buyer beware.

That looks like a great option, I'll look into the fit and finish. And what were you saying about the plenum ??

Why do you "want" and "need" a vented hood? From what I understand the vents are actually meant to help release pressure from underneath the car at high speeds. Speaking in practicality terms, do you have a wing and front and rear splitters as well?

On my blower Vette it worked for both high speed and letting out excess heat

This is a MCM hood. Built to GM factory spec's, with very good
fitment and finish. This hood costs more than most hoods.

Why do I "want" and "need" ?? I just finished my FI motor so there will be some extra heat very soon ! And yes I've started the quest for knowledge and info on splitters and rear wing/spoilers. But anyone who has headers and bolt-ons could benefit from heat extraction. And yes, I'm looking to release the air pressure from under the hood which in turn pulls the heat out.

And I've always looked to the pro's for imitation. If your going to copy, you'd might as well copy the best (C5R racing program), I speaking about the hood. Back when I was building my rock crawler I basically copied early 90's formula one turbo header designs for my turboed, propane powerplant(like I said, copy the best). They've spent tons of hours and money on R&D, so you might as well take advantage of it.

Why don't you just buy a C5R hood? You want to imitate the pros, go ahead... I'm sure it won't be cheap but it seems to be what you want.

If you look at a C5R you will notice a huge difference. There's no way it would fit, at all !! But I do appreciate your smart *** ignorance.

Buy the way, go buc's. I use to live in clearwater.

Well, they're not totally non functional but darn near if you order the hood in the full plenum package as shown in the picture. The plenum is designed to keep water off your engine but it also restricts the air flow to the vents. Mecham offers the hood with the plenum removed which reduces the hood weight 20% and makes the vents fully functional. I got the negative fit information by doing a web search on extractor hoods so I have no first hand knowledge. I'm not recommending the use or the non use of this hood, I'm just saying it's low profile and it's available.

I reaserched the Mecham hood and it got hammered by negative comments. One guy said it started to delam. in the first 5 months and when he called them, well they basically told him to shove it. And the fit and finish they say sucks...

So...my next quest is for vent, scuppers and louvers that I can lay into the hood. And the fit and finish of the hood will be perfect. So does anyone know a vendor or supplier where I could pick some of this stuff up ?? Thanks...

The fourth one down looks like the Motor City Mold hood (or a clone of it). I had the MCM hood on my '00 and absolutely loved it - fit and finish were superb and customer service was excellent. It did cost a bit, but I had no complaints in the 5+ years the hood was on the car (still on it when I sold the car).
