Default Help settle this debate.. Mod question.

So I am debating with a friend of mine whether this is possible.. I currently have vararam ls6 intake full exhaust and a tune.. Now I am thinking of adding a big cam and a torque converter and all supporting mods.

I have a stock 4l60e he is saying that the trans cant handle just the cam and torque converter and I am guaranteed to break it. From my reading though it seems like I will be perfectly fine. I will be keeping TM in when I get it tuned.

So.. Is it not true my car will be fine with stock trans and those mods?

Sit down with someone that is a pro and establish your final goal. Sounds like you are a free roller and will spend much more with less than desired results. Lets add; lets do this; lets sell I can't spend any more.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO END UP?????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????

If you're adding a big cam and a TC with a high stall ~3000. You will probably be on borrowed time with the tranny if you tend to drive the car hard. If you baby it around town and never go above 3K rpm; you'll probably be fine.

how many miles are on the tranny? I'd say that could be the biggest factor.

Cam will be the farthest I am going. 38k miles on the car. I baby it almost everywhere. Get on it every so often. Track a couple times a year.

It is my fun car, I have a civic I drive too

315 I assume

I agree with the "borrowed time" line of thinking. I am certain that it will handle it with very moderate driving, but what fun is that?

I would say at least be mindful of a new tranny in the future to match the HP level you are seeking.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

If your tranny has up to 50K miles you are going to be fine. If you have more than 50-75K your on borrowed time anything over 75K miles on a stock unit and your on borrowed minutes. The stock 4L60E is about good till 450 rwhp anything over that you'll NEED a built tranny which RPM are very well known to make great 4L60Es I have one.

If you want to give your auto a little more life then add an aftermarket valve body but me I just went for the build tranny.

Good luck

Cooler won't hurt

The key to making a tranny last is to reprogram the shift points and up the line pressures about 25% for a firmer shift.

GM programs to shift smooth with 350 hp

Smooth requires slippage which generates heat which kills trannys. So with the same program and higher HP you get more slippage.

Firmer = less slip = less heat.

Further for all the "put in a high stall" suggestions. High stalls are high because they are not locking up until the stall speed.

While they are not locked up they are slipping (by design) and generating more heat which will kill your tranny.

If you're tracking alot then go stall. For a H/C 99% street car keep the stock and reprogram.

No problem. I had heads/ cam and every bolt on (including stall and gears) running on 305 drag radials for several years with no issues at all.
I am now closer to 700 rwhp and havn't blown it yet, although I will be ordering a RPM stage V within the next few weeks

Just be sure to get the transmission tuned as well...

Makes a world of difference and should help the life of your tranny
