I was changing my intake the other day, and when I looked at the MAF Screen (04) one single fin of the hundreds that make up the screen was bent. Tried to straighten it but so small and easy to bend another I left it alone. I am however a little OCD when it comes to these things, I drove it with no codes or apparent consequence.
Anyone whether this matters to any degree or I am worrying for no reason?
Leave it alone. You don't have a problem, so don't go looking for one. Put the new intake on and forget about it. Stuff like that bothers me too, but you just have to get past it.
remove it !!!!!!! you don't need it and it doesn't do a thing for you. GM quit putting them in C5's I think? I'd have to look it up but my buddy has my LS1 Performance book.
Just be careful to not %$# any of the MAF sensor wires!

Just spray some CRC MAF cleaner on the sensor wires and screen and button her back up!
Per GM notes..... The screen was only to help "Straighten" the air flow on LS1's that received air flow from the side mounted air ducts on SUV's and Caddy's. Just to keep costs down they used the same MAF....later it was decided the C5's needed NO "straightening" cause air was directed from the front air dam into the intake.
Carefully push the screen out from the sensor wire side and not touch or bend the wires. The screen will pop out on earlier versions and some later versions had a small diameter wire snapped in place on the air filter side, just remove and pop out!

He is adding a CAI which can sometimes cause lean codes due to turbulence, if you are using a screenless MAF. Removing the screen has little benefit, and can potentially cause problems for him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 2001 and up LS1 MAFs were screened, and the LS6 MAFs weren't.
Greg, I don't have my book to look up what the GM Department head said specifically, other than it's not a big deal. I have a Vararam and have no codes or trouble other than a lead foot.
I'll let you guys discuss the pros and cons, I took mine out.
I run a Blackwing W/ Ice Box with a screenless MAF and have no problem. I just wanted the OP to know that depending on his setup, he could potentially create a problem by removing the screen, when running a CAI.
It's all good.
I have used a toothpick and a paper clip to straighten them before. Not really a problem... If its not broke don't fix it... Don't remove it, leave well enough alone
Thanks for all the input, the more i think about it the i think it does not matter, if i get bored i think i take it out and straighten it with a tooth pick like suggested, or just try to forget about. Thanks again
Took it out again last night, fixed it and everything lined up when i put back thankfully SLP can be real fun. Thanks again for help and suggestions. On to the next project....
