I had the package shipped to me where I work since I'm never home. The day the key arrived (after being on backorder) I stopped by Lowe's on the way home to get the key cut ($ did it for free). The key opened the door just fine but when I tryed to start the car nothing happened, no crank. So I measured the Ohms on the new key and it read just over 2 which would be a # 8 key even though the package it was shipped in says #7.
I haven't contacted the company yet, but should I expect a free replacement key even though the key they sent has already been cut? Or should I just order another key and check the ohms before I get the next key cut?
On a side note, after I took the new key that didn't work out and tryed to start the car with my old key the car still wouldn't start. I had to disconnect & reconnect the battery before my old key would work..
I would expect that the company would send you another, correct key at no charge. You may have to return the wrong key so that they won't think you're trying to pull a fast one on them.
I just got two new keys (#6) and I checked the ohms prior to getting them cut, and they were correct. Better do so on your next one just to be sure.

You can try to return it, I would give it a shot, I ordered my key from Ecklers and all went well, I took it to a local locksmith and found they carry the GM keys, So next time I need a key I will get it local.
Mr.Bill
I wouldnt go poking around in there like crazy (because I remember reading something about a delicate mechanism in there) but could the IG switch be a little dirty ? I know you can get a vats key to work sometimes by cleaning the pill off with a pencil eraser or some alcohol.
Any safe way he can clean up the IG switch in place rather than taking the whole thing out?
To Eklers:
I recently ordered a Vats# 7 key for my 2001 Corvette (order #109edit21). The key came in a bag that says it is a #7 and I had the key cut without checking the ohms on it. Well the key will open the doors but will not start the car, so I checked the ohms on the new key and the ohms read to be just over 2, which would make it a Vats #8 key. Can I send this key back even though it had been cut and get an actual Vats # 7 key sent?
From Eklers:
Hello,
I am sorry to say that we won't be able to take these back since it has been cut. We wouldn't be able to put back on shelf. Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

Atleast it was a fast response..
So I guess we can't trust Ecklers to do the right thing seeing the package was mis-marked which wasn't your fault, This is good info to know, They will lose a lot of customers over a key that was sipped from them and packaged wrong.
You would think that they would take it back because it was a fault on there end and not yours.
Shame on Ecklers.
Thanks for the info.
Mr.Bill
So, was Eckler's just going to throw it back on the shelf and resell it (wrongly) to the next guy? Or would they renumber/rebag the item and sell it correctly? Either way, THEIR quality control is responsible for the mistake and they should make good on a what, $12 item? If the QC is lacking on any particular item, you have to wonder where else they may have problems, AND how they may handle similar situations on larger dollar items. You'd think, to keep a satisfied customer, that they'd eat that small item. But then what do I know...?

If they sent you the wrong key, they should make it right.

I bought a couple keys at ACE hardware. They cut the keys then asked me if my car was in the parking lot...I told them it was...he told me to go make sure they worked before I paid for them. If they didn't work they would recut them.

The cut is not his problem, the cut was fine. The PASS pellet was the wrong value.
I found them on Ebay for a good price. Mine were the right vats # but the hardware store cut them wrong. I ordered another one and took it to a locksmith and that one works. The one that is cut wrong works in the door and one way in the ignition if jiggled. I cut the plastic off and use it for a wallet key since That car has no Onstar. Most likely will only need to open the door to get the key anyway. I have needed the wallet key once for my truck.
