Default EC Mirror Glass Issue

My original EC mirror glass looked like sombody leaked or splashed a liquid on the surface of the glass so I replaced the original electrochromatic mirror glass in the driver's side door mirror in my vert with glass from vettenuts. Not singling out Marc as this is obviously NOT his fault. It looked like new and worked perfect for a while but now it looks like my old mirror glass. It still works perfectly but it looks bad if you get up close just like my old one did.

Like I say the glass looks great when I installed it and for several months afterwards. But now it is just like the old one. WTF? Has to be a design or electrical issue that causes this to happen.

I have to ask "what causes this to occur and have any others experianced this issue?"

I have what appears to be 2 water streaks between the glass and mirror-material (though no gap is evident) on my pass side outside mirror. First noticed it a few months ago.
Same problem as yours?

It sounds simular except the passenger side mirror glass is not the electrochromatic type as is the driver's side.

I've tried to take pictures but none of them really shows the issue I have.

So nobody else has a defective EC mirror on the drivers door? I would have figured this was a bigger problem...

I just saw this post. That is really strange that both the mirrors turned color on you. Call me at the shop tomorrow and lets see if we can figure something out.

My EC mirror (Original) appears like it is delaminating also.

Marc: I just read this so I'll call you on Friday. Thanks for taking an interst.

Again it IS NOT Marc's fault!!! Got to be something in the design or maybe just my car or mirror housing... Who knows? It does look like it could be delaminating but I looked at the old mirror glass when I removed it and could see no such delamination or problems on the rear of the glass...

Mine used to have just a small spot on the top right corner which eventually grew into a very thin line in the top right corner. Just the other day it has now spread over the entire top third of the mirror.

I had just washed the car and also I am parking outside on a slanted driveway rahter than a garage just recently. Maybe a little bit of water got behind the glass and is causing the problem?

Anyone with any info on this? or where i can get an affordable replacement?

Default Been There Already

The glass is an easy replacement part as it snaps in. I found a replacement and it also went bad. Note: It was not the vendors fault. I figure it has to do with my car and I've learned to live with it without turning on the EC mirror power button.

I might try it again some day...

i just had the same problem with the driver's EC mirror on my 04 CE convertible. i bought mine from gene cully at gmpartshouse and it is an OEM GM replacement right down to the exact stampings and number on the part. in addition, gene included a copy of the GM revised tech notes regarding the install. the EC is very sensitive to pressure and it is possible that you broke the "seal" on the glass putting it back on. the instructions call for using a block of wood to spread the pressure load on the glass when you press it back onto the mounting points. it really takes a tremendous amount of pressure to reinstall (at least that was my experience the other day when i changed mine out. it was a real pain.

Anything is possible but I've learned to live with it. It hasn't worsened since I don't use the EC button anymore.

I had the same issue. While mine was still in the yellow tint stage. When it gets to the point that it looks like you have water behind the glass your seal has broken and it will very soon leak out of the mirror onto your paint. When that happens it will eat your paint up.

I ended up buying a used NON EC driver side mirror from Vettenuts. Still works great and I dont have to worry about the EC ever breaking.

IF you just HAVE to have a EC mirror replacement I would suggest buying the whole driver side mirror unit and not just the mirror itself. Just snapping the mirror into its housing can cause the seal to break. The whole unit run about 700-800 dollar new from GM. A used replacement EC mirror might be cheaper but you will soon find your in the same situation as you were when you began.

Mine is stuck in tint mode whether I have the dimming switch on or not.
I learned to live with it that way.

Thats the beginning of the end. IT will get darker and darker until the seal completely goes and you'll get the air bubble. It may stay like that for years or go tomorrow.
