Default Doing a little tune up

I'm going to change spark plugs tomorrow morning. Have decided to go with NGK TR5GP gapped from factory at .040. I've got about 65k miles and this is first change. It's 2004 CE 100% stock daily driver.

Have y'all got any last minute advice? Thanks!

Reason for not going Iridiums and using NGK? Just wondering.

I am running a small CAM and they are 1/2 the price. Great plug in my humble opinion + I trust my builders opinion.

Platinum plugs are not too expensive and offer a fine electrode.

Can you not afford Iridium plugs?

Platinum and Iridium are hard/dense metals not susceptible to erosion from the electric discharge. As a result, they have high electrical resistance. The NGK TR's are Copper, therefore they erode quicker, but have very low resistance. Lower resistance = more spark energy. Buy copper-core plugs for a fraction of the cost and replace them more often. I will take the trade off. It's cake changing them every 20k instead of every 100k. Like I said, I like the NGK's and so does my car.

Yes, NGK v-power TR55 plugs are what you want, not those

Ok, I'm listening. Why TR55, not TR5? The TR5 is factory gapped at .040. That what I understand the Corvette wants. I put TR55GP's (.060 gap) in my Cadillac Deville and have been very pleased.

?????

I don't mind paying extra for Iridium or "plutonium" plugs if someone can tell me what the extra $$ is really buying.

Number 7 plug will be the toughest - a nice swivel extension will help a lot.

You are going to need new plug wires as well. Next to impossible to change out 65,000 mile stock wires without damaging them.

I have had AC's & NGK's in mine and never really noticed any difference. Then again, I rarely run the rpm's over 3K.

plutonium???

The extra cost is partly because of the precious metals that are used, and probably a lil "up charge" to help pay for the CEO's Porsche.

Iridium is a fine choice as the electrode is generally going to be finer than other choices, especially the fancy “laser” option plugs. Are they worth the added cost??? Eh, who knows.

Platinum or “plutonium” as you call them, are a great choice as well because they still offer finer electrodes as compared to copper plugs. Platinum plugs also come in a “laser” option and have an even narrower electrode.

Unless you really have special demands, i.e. racing, etc, you most likely would see no difference between the iridium and platinum plugs – in performance or service interval.

As far as what has been mention about copper giving a better electric discharge, well, yes, copper has less resistance, but the fine electrode of a iridium or platinum plugs will offer a more concentrated spark or “hotter” sparks as some guys refer to it. And the ignition system of these cars has more than enough “juice” to negate the fact that platinum and iridium are more resistant metals. You’d probably be surprised at how few volts the ignition system produces.

Personally, I’m not too big on wasting money, but I do want what works so I chose an NGK Platinum plug; they offered the fine electrode I want and a price that is justifiable; and they’ll last just fine between my annual tune-ups (approx 20-30k miles).

Overall an easy job. Once you do it the first time, it becomes much easier. Good luck!

What plugs did you decide on?
