Hi everyone..... I'm considering a 1 post lift but would like to check one out before I make a final decision. Does anyone out there have a Bendpak or American Custom Lifts (MI-4.5) that I can check out in the Southern CA area?
Single post lift AKA frame contact lift, had one in my service station air over hydraulic.
Not a good choice for a home garage if this is the same, installation would require digging a rather deep hole to house the piston and hydraulic cylinder.
I doubt he's talking about the old fashioned service station single column, all hydraulic unit that required an in ground installation.
A modern single column lift is used more for limited space/parking garages. I can't see how useful it would be to do work on a car. They're also limited in lifting capacity. BEND PAK single column lifts are limited to 6,000#.
The one caveat I read was to insure you make the platform perfectly horizontal (for obvious reasons). I would think it might also require a thicker concrete surface to mount the single column (?).
I found this with a GOOGLE search, using "one post lift" as keywords. Scroll down for multiple images and description...
The single post lifts require a MUCH more substantial concrete footing to be able to absorb the loading. I'm not a fan of those designs as they limit the ability to work on the car. If storage is the reason for use then they might be OK. There are several twin post lifts that are designed for low overhead garages that would be much cheaper and more functional. Any of these lifts you can install if you are even minimally mechanically proficient. Here are three.

A customer has had one for 7-8 years to store his car on, no servicing. It leaves unabstructed area in garage. I don't think he had to do anything to his garage slab. I had phone pics, can't find them.
That first link is a hoot! I had a great laugh reading it.... Probably because when I put my 4 post lift together I felt the same way...but I did get mine put together in about 8 hours.
i dont know how i'd feel having my vette 5 feet in the air on a one post lift.all that would come to mind would be ..ttimmmmbbberrrr..we have a 4-post lift and love it. i dont think a 4post would take up that much more room considering its basicly just about the width of the car minus a lil extra for the width of the posts.
I'll get some info on the one post lift that a friend has this Mon. when he gets back in town. DRROBSTAR if you want to post the pics I emailed to ya feel free. He had to do nothing with his garage slab to install. On the pics I emailed, the deck portion was shortened (cut) so it would not extend out past his car, it is normally longer.

I am sorry, But I would have to pass, Why get a lift that you can't even work on a car on?
Also I don't feel safe having a 3500 lb car just hanging off 1 post.

Get a 4 post with sliding jack trays. I've had mine for 10 years and built two street rods on it as well as a 67 Nova. Plus did all the maintainance on my Vette and my Jeep. Absolutly no problems ever.
Mine is a "supperior Lift" but I think most of them are about the same quality.

I agree a single post lift seams really scary when you’re under it. The couple I have seen tend to sway a little bit and it is really disconcerting. I like the 4 post with casters option much better. It would allow you to store you can and also do some work on it as well. You don’t have that option with a single post, a solid metal platform just does not give you good access. http://www.bendpak.com/car-lifts/fou...ifts/HD-9.aspx
Thanks for the comments - I liked the HD9 from Bendpak, but decided to go with the Voyager from American Custom Lifts. Just yesterday I jumped on it. I was pretty limited to lifts that have adjustable locks, because my ceiling is kinda low for stacking my Maxima under the Vette. The Dannmar and Backyard Buddy lifts were tempting b/c of price, but didn't have the flexibility I needed. 1-2 weeks and I'll have the lift in my garage!!
