Hey i have a new set of rotors and AC Delco pads to install on my 02 z, ive been contemplating doing it myself for a while, ive never done a brake job on any car however ive done some other work installed a vortech blower on my mustang. Anyway id like to save some money and learn how to change the pads/rotors, i planned to pick up a nice low profile floor jack as i have jack stands and just take it one wheel at a time. Question is what should i use to decompress the pistons to install the new pads also is this a job that someone can/should do their first time? I enjoy stopping hahah. Also i have heard you are suppose to use new bolts for the caliper bracket and caliper..but ive also heard guys re-use them and just use the "Red" loctite stuff. With this all said i dont impact tools so id be doing all the wrenching by hand..let me know your thoughts, any help is appreciated.
If you are comfortable with tools and understand how the brakes work it is really not a difficult job. To compress the calipers I have used everything from a big C-clamp to a pair of channel-locs. Just be sure to apply pressure to the piston straight on to avoid damaging it.
I always reused my bolts on the brakes without issue. A bit of red loc-tite and they worked fine
BTW, update your location! Perhaps a member near you could offer to give you a hand. I know if anyone near me needs assistance or access to the tools I've alway got the room in my garage for a sunday job
If you installed a Vortech on a car you will be able to do the brakes. If needed, take your time and check the forum for any questions.
With regards to compressing the caliper, I've used a big C-clamp and a block of wood (2x4). This helped provide even direct pressure. I would also put a rag over the caliper to avoid scratcing it up.
Brakes are easy, give it a shot. Like mentioned above, post your location and someone may offer to help. I would definitely help if you're close to me.
Thanks for the input guys, I will probably give it a shot, i did in fact install a vortech kit on my mustang without any issue really and ive wrenched other things before intakes/exhaust just haven't ever messed with the brakes.
