I had my 2000 vette stored for winter in my basement and the water softner mal-functioned and put salt water all over my chrome front wheel. I didn't notice it because it was hidden against the wall and I'm not sure how long ago this happened. Possibly 2 months ago. Anyway I tried washing the wheel and it still has marks on the chrome where the salt water layed. I took the wheel off and tried eveything from cleaner wax to coarse rubbing compound. Some came off but still have marks. Anything else to try. Will a felt buffing cone do anything.

Try a little vinegar in some water - it may take off the marks you describe.
Here's some tips I found searching for vinegar uses:
To shine chrome sink fixtures that have a lime buildup, use a paste made of 2 tablespoons salt and 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar.
Make your own scouring cleanser by combining 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 tablespoon liquid detergent. Add just enough white distilled vinegar to give it a thick but creamy texture.
Make a metal cleanser by adding enough white distilled vinegar to 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar to make a paste. Rub it on and let it dry on the surface. Wash it off and dry with a soft cloth.
Something like a powerball buffing cone plus some good chrome polish might work also.
