Default A/C Question

Well the great North Texas cold front has kept me out of my car for a week.

Today when I got in I hit the "AUTO" on the Temp control head because the A/C light on the control was not on. It was 34 outside but very warm inside for it had been in the sun all day.

When I tried to manually press the A/C button on the control head it would flash 2 or 3 times and stay off. The Control head would show EXT (exterior - ?) and would blow cool but not cold air. Turning the temp control to colder would make the fan blow harder but the A/C never kicked in.

Any ideas? I get the feeling the A/C compressor isn't working... or is it the control head? Or was it simply because it was very cold outside?

Hoping someone has had this happen and shed some light on it.

Thanks in advance!!

You could unplug a/c compressor and OHM it,or see what your voltage reading is at the plug when you in gauge the a/c, That's a start, good trouble shooting will solve any problem..........!

From the Owners Manual

The air conditioning does not operate at temperatures below
approximately 35F to 40D (2C to 4C).
The light on the A/C button will flash if pressed when
air conditioning is not allowed.

Normal OPS....don't tear it apart........

I think that this is normal. Based on the outside temp, the default override is to not engage the compressor.

I am in Dallas, and mine does this as well, as stated above. You just have to accept the fact that you do not have total control over the system, it'll come around when it feels the time is right? If its too warm, I put it on 60 and usually at least get cool air or drop a window a little. Plus, you need to drive for a bit for the outside temp to get a better reading.

I guess we're not use to this cold weather in Texas, I just got my hvac back and installed. Well mine started doing the same thing and I thought it was messed up. Thanks for the info on the blinking a/c light, now I know too. L8R THE FLASH

Default If you lived in MD, NY, CT, IA, ME etc you would see the flashing a lot

The AC compressor will not run near freezing temps to protect it from locking up. Why would you want to run the compressor when the outside air temp is under 40. This is what the system is designed to do.

For the defrost. The a/c drys the air also. But would it do it at freezing temps - don't know. Normally the air is very dry during the winter so it may be a mute point. As you said - may be no reason for it and the system work as it was designed. Thanks

Mine just started doing this and the outside temperature is between 65 to 70 degrees. Any idea why this might be doing this with outside temps well above freezing?

is the compressor clicking when you press the ac button? if so just recharge the system and check for leaks...it may have dried up. check to see if theres pressure etc..

IF its blinking, and the temps are above 70's, you are probably low on freon.

Haven't heard it clicking, I'll have to keep an ear out now for that. I hardly ever drive the thing.

I just recharged it late last summer and haven't driven it a whole lot since. Guess I'll have to check it out again. Thanks for the replies
