Default Looking at C5 - fair prices?

I am buying a Vette before the end of the month, I have been trying to stay in the c4 price range but today I ran across a 99, 66k appears to be in excellent condition for 14,500. Is that a good price?

Thanks,

Mack

That's strange, I've been looking for a 08 ZO6 at C5 prices!

I just bought my 99 about 6 weeks ago for 16K. It's a Z51, 6 speed, HUD, tow-tone interior and Nassau Blue (my favorite color). It had almost 53K when I bought it. Sounds like you found a good deal. The big thing right now is that hardly anyone has that kind of cash around to buy a car, so if you do, it's a buyers market - take advantage of that I had 5 calls from owners of other C5's I had looked at before buying this one (but passed on) call me to see if I still wanted to buy theirs. Turns out they couldn't find anyone who actually had cash in hand, just a lot of people looking.

As for the C5 driving, it's AMAZINGLY better than the C4 - prepare to be VERY impressed.

Depending on what options are on the car, yes, that's not a bad price for the car.

a few months ago I got my 99 frc with 56K for 13,500...needed new tires (and wheels IMO ) and just a basic tune up. I took a one way flight to see it and drove it 13 hours home...

but I am glad I did it...awesome car!

its funny how a vette can keep you wide awake behind the wheel when your dead tired.

Just for a comparison, I bought my 02 coupe with 43,000 miles for 15,500 this past November. It only needed new tires(800.00) I searched everywhere every day for 6 months but it was really worth the fun, I mean work.

I wouldn't give that advice to someone myself, there are many C5 and C6 owners that have and have had both that would disagree.

If the car is mechanically sound I would consider that a good price, especially with those options

i'm not hip on those 2:73 gears though, good for fuel mileage but you'll notice the lack of performance if that's your thing.

It also has new exhaust, upgrade to the chrome Z06 wheels, new slotted rotors and less than 5k on tires. Only problem is he still owes on the car and having bought one like that before it can get messy.

Ah, as long as you have your ducks in a row, and he/she does, it's not a big deal.

I just bought my C5 from a guy who still had a lien on it and my transaction went like clockwork.

And we were also dealing with an out of state lien holder. They are the ones you have to be concerned about generally speaking.

Paid 17k for a 99 coupe with over 20 options 6 speed but it had only 14k miles on it. Its a no extra paint car and had been garage kept like new condition with orignal tires on it and no mods.

If buying a car with a lein on it go with the owner to the bank that has the lein on the car and do the deal there. Make sure when you leave you have a clear title with the lein released. Have the seller to notify the bank that you will be coming in to do the deal most banks keep thier titles at a central location and may have to send off for the title.I was a car dealer for 18 years.

The 2:73 gears would be a deal breaker for me. Not interested at all.

TraceZ,

35 years ago i would have agreed with that, nothing lees than a 3:55 would have suited me. My last high performance car was a 68 GTX with 5:13 gears. Now I am old and just want to cruise to the beach with my better half so gas mileage is not a bad thing.

Yes, they both have their own... feel, I personally did like the c5 better, felt far more like a luxury exotic, smoother of a ride, you could hardly tell that you are really going that fast at speed and acceleration felt like a jet taking off. On the other hand the c4s felt more like muscle cars to me, you could feel it (and hear it) when you were on the highway and any time you accelerated, the 84 far more than the 93.. Oh except the seats, the seats in the C4s were way more comfortable than the standard seats in the c5.

But on the point I bought my 99 with 84k miles for 12500, its in nearly perfect condition but without several of the fancy mods like HUD, dual climate, and stuff like that. Sounds like a good deal

General rule of thumb for buying Vettes: The newer the better.

If you want a car that is very nice, you need to start with one that's very nice. Vettes are a car where almost any one that has owned one becomes an "expert". So you found a bargain on a Vette...good, but does it have any paint work, interior wear, wheels scraped, etc? People will pick it apart at cruise-ins and car shows. You can find some mint examples of 94-96's for the price with mileage in the 30k's. But if you did find a real nice one for that money, sweet!
