Ok so my weekend of maintenence didnt turn out as well as I would have hoped.
My fuel filter is now spewing gas out of the connector. I guess I must have damaged one of the plastic connectors when I switched it from the old filter to the new one. I called the local dealer and they couldnt even find the correct lines much less the connectors. Where can I get new connectors at or is it one of those Im screwed scenerios?
I haven't changed mine yet but thought I remember seeing that people were buying spare ones at NAPA, O'Reilly, etc. I would check with them to see if they have them.
That is where I am looking online. I am not seeing anything specific so I may just have to go into the store with one of the old ones and try to match them up. I am sure that these clips are not corvette specific so but a part number would be great.
My fuel filter too sprouted a leak and unfortunately sprayed the gas directly onto the HOT exhuast pipes last year. What an expereince that was avoiding a potential fatal scenerio!
They sell a special tool for connecting them on the 97-99 which is on the frame rail don't know where they are on the other C-5's but I put one on two years ago and it has leaked twice.
I either didnt get it pushed far enough onto the hardline in the front or one of the two plastic retainers in the rear didnt grab the lip. Now I didnt use the disconnect tool to push the front of the filter onto the hardline so that may be where my issue is but I would think that you should just be able to push it on. It was early this morning and I was on my way to work when it started spewing so I just shut it down and grabbed the old truck. My initial thought was the plastic retainers which apparently NAPA carries in a general assortment but if you need to use the tool to do the front for install as well that may be it.
easy fix, the front fitting had not been pushed into the fuel line far enough. when i crawled back underneath it i could see the lip on the hardline sticking out from the filter. The back two fittings where the plastic retainers are were dry. I pushed the filter foward until I heard it click in place and cranked her up. No leaks in the driveway after 10 mins of idle so it's time for a drive. Wish me luck.
My old one leaded like a sieve connector deteriorated
Had to spend almost an hour just getting it apart without damaging fuel line. I took bolts out of left muffler and swung it out of the way to get room to work. No need to remove it. ALWAYS REPLACE THE NYLON FASTENERS. New ones came with the filter. Can also buy them at a decent auto parts store. Saw them at NAPA. GM recommends a lil motor oil in the filter ends before reassembling. Push hard then pull to make sure they don't pull apart.
A lot of pressure like 90 PSI or so from the pump.
new plastic clips do not come with the filter. The wix filter I used did not. I even called three dealerships on a new GM filter and those didn't come with the clips either.
NAPA does have them. They don't show up on a parts search though. You have to go in with the old clips and find the right size in their bin. Didn't need to remove any exhaust stuff. Must be an auto compared to manual thing because I can reach up with both hands unobstructed to the thing. I just didn't click in the front of the filter all the way onto the line. This time I just pushed hard and heard a real loud click as the springs were going over the hard line's lip. Even though I bought some new plastic connectors for the back two lines they were not leaking so I decided not to tempt fate. If they start leaking then I will replace. Put 20 miles on it today with no leaks so, so far so good.
I'll give ya an "ATTA BOY",,,and file that one in my back brain memory banks!! Might come in handy when the time comes for my filter change,,and it's probably not that far in the future!!
