I have a 2003 coupe with just 36K miles. I've owned this C5 for almost a year. When shifting my auto trans from drive to reverse I hear a slight "clunk" at the rear driver's side wheel. Lately I've been hearing it when shifting into drive as well. At this point the "clunk" is not very loud, but it sounds like there may be some play in the axel.
Is this normal for a C5? Is there anything I can or should be checking to avoid the condition from getting worse or causing damage?
Check the axle shift splines. It's a common C5 problem. Check the forum there are good write ups about the fix. Very easy to do.
I did mine 30,000 miles ago, noise has not come back,

What is this caused by? Does it hurt anything? Anyone have a DIY, what is this fix you guys are talking about? I have the same issue except mine makes a creaking noise a little bit too.
Thanks! The noise does sound a bit like U joint play in a "tradional" rear wheel drive car.
Hope that it is only this and not your couplers in the TT. azz hole had my car on a dyno ran it up to 200 mph. Then when I went to get it same sound but was coming like just under the shifter. Both of my couplers were shot.
At first I was thinking it may be the issue I was having (see thread:http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...post1576914612) but I do remember mine doing that specific noise (forward to reverse and vice versa) you are referring too long ago and it ended up being the axle nut needing to be tightened and greased.
