Default New C5 Purchase

I am in the market for a C5 corvette and I want to stay below the 16k range in price and 75K range in miles. I am wondering about the reliability of the engines / transmissions (M6) at this mileage, because I want to do mods enough to get me below a 12.5 ¼ mile. Are there any specific things I need to look for in the powertrain. What is the best year / model for the C5 corvette with removable top? Best year meaning reliability, power, drive train etc?

Thanks all

Beggars cant be choosers with your budget. To get the cleanest one possible you may have to sacrifice getting the color/transmission/etc you really want.

Both transmission choices can make the number at the dragstrip, what you should think about more are what options YOU want to have for the next couple years..

Every year C5 is reliable and 75K miles is nothing for a well maintained unabused C5. Do a search and you will find threads on countless C5's going strong in excess of 150K, 200K, 300K and even higher mileage. You can't go wrong with any year C5 as long as it is taken care of.

2001 - 2004 Corvettes hive a higher HP and Torque rating of 350/360 auto and 350/375 manual as compared to 1997 - 2000 at 345/350. This is primarily due to an improved intake manifold (same as Z06) and modifications to the camshaft to broaden the torque curve. The Z06 block was also used on 2002+ Corvettes.

Don't be afraid of mileage. Condition is far more important than mileage. There are many ragged out 50k mile cars out there that need thousands of dollars worth of work. I looked at a lot of them before I settled on a 2000 convertible with 125,000 miles that needed practically nothing. A garaged high mileage car beats an outside low mileage car any day.

Last fall I bought a 2002 m6 coupe with 75000 on it for 18000. Had looked at several before getting this one. Condition is what you want to look at. Checked out two that only had 40k on them. Took them to a garage and put on a lift. They had been abused, needed a lot of work. Mine looks like new, inside and out. Runs great. All I did was change all fluids.

WOW thanks for all that help and advice, I got to sell this 04 GTO first, or trade it in.
