Default ok belt flew off

well i drove my car last night no problems. then i get into it today and i had no power steering. followed by the service vehicle soon. i drove it 2 miles and when i shut the car off it said charging system failure. so i googled what that is and got thoroughly confused. started the car after about 30 mins and i had a low battery reading and all the other same faults. getting closer to home the fluid temp went over red, low engine power kicked in and it stalled at my driveway. finally got it in the garage and opened the hood. radiator fluid was spewing out and i looked at the alternator. hmm where is my belt? not sure when but apparently my belt fell off sometime.
without knowing when it happened makes me wonder if i will still have this charging fault after i put a new belt on and charge the battery.
if anyone has any input or some sort of idea of what i should do, i would be very grateful. thank you in advance

**** the battery,I'd be more concerned about the temp going over the red zone. You're lucky if all you did was drain your battery.
If you have a battery tender I suggest you hook it up. If not, get a belt and try starting it. If it doesn't just give it a jump. If your battery is in decent condition you should be able to recharge it no problem. Let's see what the other guy's say..

You need to change your tension pulley, or your new belt is going to pop of also.

been there done that, its a cheap easy fix.

The belt came off for a couple of possible reasons. Was it making noise first therefore worn out and it broke? The larger concern is the harmonic balancer...is it wobbling? Any loud screeching/bearing tupe sounds from the idler pulley(which you can now easily spin)?

Wow. Next time you car tells you that something is wrong, at least open the hood and look.

Something made the belt come off. Maybe tenshioner, Idler pulley, Bad balancer, bad belt. Have someone check it for you. Please open the hood and see what is going on once in a while.

OMG. Your car was begging for help with all of those error codes popping up!! There is no DIC display for TURN THE CAR OFF, but apparently there should be. Next time don't wait so long to investigate. A tow home or to a shop is a lot cheaper than limping it home and risking severe damage.

The spewing coolant part is discerning. Charge the battery, replace the tensioner and hope to he!! you didn't blow a head gasket.

Good luck!

You have a thread going in the Tech section too for this same problem. No need for two.

Sounds like we all should be carrying an extra belt in one of the trunk pits

Well i started the other tread because i only had the one DIC problem. I was driving only 2 miles at night. On my way back the last tenth mile or so is when everything else started happening. Im currently painting all of the plastics under the hood and the liner and just replaced the red top to a yellow so i have had the cars hood open also had the instrument cluster out. I googled the DIC problem as soon as i shut my car off. That was also my first thread trying to get a quick answer. This one is different because i now know more of the situation.

1. crank pulley - replace with aftermarket, I chose PowerBond
2. belt tensioner - could replace with a Katech manual unit

my favorite part of the whole story is that instead of opening up the hood to see if anything was up you googled what the dic said.

i hope you do not need anything more than a belt and tensioner.

All I can say is poor car, I can't believe you didn't pull over to see what is up and just drove the car home and noticed the next day or so your belt was off.

YIKES! No power steering was a pretty good clue that belt came off! Pull over, call AAA! Would be very concerned about damage from over heating.

as soon as i got home i popped the hood. didnt do it at the time because i was going to my inlaws to get my father in law off the floor so yes i googled that after i had a chance to. but then that would probably now make me look bad. ya know getting on my phone as soon as i had a chance trying to figure out what my car is doing. then coming home to my wife with 3 screaming kids. But without me telling absolutely everything i start getting bashed for things. family first... cars can have parts replaced

Glad to hear there were extenuating circumstances. Got the thinking you might be my ex-wife.

we ALL have some sort of extenuating circumstances.

i choose to not share mine because it is a corvette forum not the view, the ellen show or oprah.

again, hope it is not too serious or costly fix but you should have known better.

if that sounds like bashing it is not meant to be.
