Default Mpg better above 85mph!

So i know i have read countless upon countless threads in regards to going above 70 mpg BUT

i was driving down the Highway today... it was oddly wide open which is never the case...
i had the cruise control on at 70 in 6th gear..
flat surface i was getting 31ish mpg, and going up a hill (in 6th gear it would drop down to 20-24 depending on how big the hill was..

since it was so open and i have enver tried the above 70 is horrible gas mileage i thought id get it a shot..

so now with cruise control on at 85 mpg in 6th gear...
flat surface 35-36mpg, and up at hill 28-29 mpg..

So i guess im just trying to figure out why ive seen so many "above 70mpg kills your gas mileage?"

Thank you for taking the time!

Matt

I haven't seemn the bad MPG over 70 threads..I have known for years I get better MPG over 70 in 6th gear...even with the cam and SC I get at least 31 as long as I stay out of the boost

So when the officer that just pulled you over asks you why you were speeding, just tell him "I was trying to save gas-I actually don't like to drive fast, especially in THIS thing".
That way,he'll realize you were just "going the extra MPH" for the environment, and probably thank you instead of issuing you a citation....

I would be suspect using the DIC for accurate mpg numbers.

the highway i live near is 75mph, traffic alwasy moves fast 80-85. cops wont pull you over on this highway as long as traffic is flowing

please this isnt a debate about speeding on getting pulled over, just looking for answers to the question PLEASE :-)

Thank you for your input!

Well first off it sounds like you are using the instant miles per gal on the DIC, That isn't very reliable at all, I can make mine say 99 mpg if I wish. The only true way is the old fastion way, Fill up write your miles down and next fill up figure out miles driven and gals used.

yes i have been using the dic, i took a trip to Oklahoma from georgia last summer, and i used that method, when it was all said and done the DIC was about 0.9 mpg different than your method. i used both to compare.
also i took in to consideration that when i stoped for gas my mpg went down being in lower gears.
so i just figured that the DIC worked pretty decent

havent done any research on the DIC to be honest about its reliability. but thank you for bringing it up. i will research that now!

Again thank you for all your input!

The average miles per gal works really close over a long haul, But the instant is just that.

I found my car to be nearly identical whether driving at 60mph or 80mph. When crunching the numbers, I think the difference was only 1mpg. That was done driving to another city 450 miles away and then back home in one day.

i found from 70-83ish gets hurts. but a cruise at 85 mpg at around 2k rpms, it stays at a higher constant instant.

I've noticed that I too get slightly better gas mileage when testing my mpg above the legal speed limit.

Seriously though, the car does seem to do better when it is going 75-80 mph.

the biggest difference i noticed was on non flat surfaces, if im going up and down constantly. if im in 6th gear doing 65 im around.. o idk 1.5 rpms? which hurts my gas mileage when going UP a hill..

when im closer to 2.0 rpms around 80-82 mpg i believe. i get MUCH better mpg going up the hill. or atleast the instant DIC says

i consistantly get 30mpg (or just a bit more) when cruising fairly long distances with the cruise set at just under 80 (usually set at 78). in 6th gear, you're only turning about 1700 rpm, so that's pretty impressive in my opinion. compared to my 78 (lucky to get 15, lol) it's a real dream!!

I have an 03 Coupe w/3:42's.

I was on a road...a long road....yea, a race track, that's it! I couldn't see anyone on this long straight track for ~3 - 4 mi. I turned on the "Instantaneous gas mileage" display on the DIC. I held the car at 90 mph for >3 miles and the DIC held steady at 27 mpg.

Is there any chance you could have been going DOWN a very slight grade on the 80+ run? Any wind or other variables?
