Is there much diffence beween the 3:90 and 4:10 ratios performane wise for a stock 6spd? My 97' is bone stock, which ratio would be considered a better upgrade? Im looking for better low speed performance.

With trans do you have good diff that will play. But if it was me go with the 3:90.
would depend on how you are using/driving the car. With the 6speed you already have 3:42's. It creates a bit of a quandary without knowing what your actual goal is. 3:90 will be an improvement,,4:10 even more so,,but will cause a little more shifting around town. Neither will really cause problems,,and both will give the "more grunt" sensation. I drove one with 4:10's,,and nothing that dramatic or problematic. Guessing 4:10's might cost about 3 or so MPG on the highway. What are you looking for,is the main question!!

I understand going from 3:42 to 4:10 will knock close to a sec off 1/4 mile. I don't know if that has been proven or not but if that is the case it will feel like you've knocked some time off the 0-60 for sure!
Keep in mind that what you save in time you will likely loose in the time it takes to shift an extra gear. Thats why I say it will FEEL like you have knocked some time off as there will be a much harder pull.
They will both do that but you will need stickier tires than stock runflats. I launch a 2K with 4:10's and Goodyear GSD3 non runflats and it fights for traction. Even from a 5 mph roll she breaks loose but is very manageable. I love them and they are a hoot to drive with. As far as shifting more around town you don't. I often go 1-3-5 or 6 or if a slow roll 2-4-6. The only possible issue you may have is you have to shift out of 1st very soon after taking off. It does not bother me much. I would like to drive a C5 6 speed with 3:90's to see if that is about the same.
If your engine is stock you can sometimes run out of your power band. You may actually slow down in the quarter if you go to steep on the gearing. This may sound crazy to some of you but I have 40+ years of experience drag racing. In the eigth mile you may be able to run some very low gears but you may not have enough "motor" to support them in the full quarter.

I've had both in my M6 car. I blew the 3.90s up and then went to 4.10's. They both pull hard but the car seemed to pull longer with the 3.90's. If I could do it again, I would have stuck with the 3.90s.
