About 2 weeks ago I got an new key fob, and yes the stupid dealership charged me the $60 to program it without my consent. Well a couple of days ago after I locked the doors and walked off....I heard another horn chirp, as if I accidently hit the lock button again. At first I thought I actually hit it again. Later I noticed it was doing it in my garage by itself. Well It really concerned me today when I left it outside and the phantom horn chirp happened and I asked my wife to check the door handle before we left, it was locked. When we returned two hours later it was unlocked(not cool). It is somehow related to the fob(IMO), cause I hear the doorlocks as well when it happens. It just randomly locks or unlocks when it wants to. Please any advice or experience with this would help.
I just got a new key fob for my 98 and it does the same thing some times . On your fob it should have the passive on/off that slides to either side. turn it on and off a few times leaving it in the off position at the end and that should help. These damn things seem to have a mind of there own. I did talk to an expert on this matter and he also informed me that there are many other cars that work off the same frequency as our remotes and this interferes sometimes if you happen to park close enough to that person.
Well I just went through my computer to try and disengage the passive feature but it only allows for driver door or both doors, no off feature. So I turned the fob switch on and off, leaving it in the off position. As soon as I locked her up, shut the garage door and headed into bed.....I hear a faint horn chirp from the garage, I couldn't help but giggle a little out of frustration.
Hmmm, it was my understanding that passive lock will automatically lock the doors after a set period of time (like 10 seconds)...as long as the keys are not in the ignition.
I have had this problem. I can't remember the exact solution but I think it was this:
Turn the passive lock feature ON. Get out of range (car should lock when you get far enough away). Turn off passive lock at that point.
It's been almost a decade but I kept messing with it till it stopped. I believe this is how I did it, but if that doesn't work, keep messing with different scenarios and you'll figure it out. Once you do, leave the the switch off and never touch it again.
Also, to avoid the $60 charge in the future, all you have to do is:
Put key in ignition and turn the ignition on (do not start).
Hold both lock+unlock at the same time until the horn chirps.
Done.

It also tells you how to do it in your owners manual.

As others have stated you have a "PASSIVE" key lock, so when you walk away it automatically locks and when you get close it unlocks - the HORN is set to notify you that it is locking or unlocking!
There is a small switch at the bottom of the FOB, switch it to OFF and you will have full control manually
The feature was from '97-'99 and in 2000 they did away with it.
I had a FOB that, no matter what position the passive switch was set on, would throw signals to the car. I opened up the FOB and cut the leads on the movement sensor (the small component that rattles). Never had a problem after

Might be your best bet to cure this if turning the switch to the off position doesn't stop it from happening.
