I understand that the underhood lamp will go out after 10-15 minutes thanks to the battery run-down protection, but is the lamp supposed go out immediately after the hood is closed or does it still remain lit for 10-15 minutes?
If it times out and you still need it on,close the hood about 2/3 of the way down, and raise it again, and the light will come on for another 10 minutes or so.
Check the plug (follow the wires that come out of the hood)
If it gets corroded or loose (or"unhooked" like some people do) that could be your problem.
The load monitored circuit on that little light makes it a lot more complicated than it needs to be,IMO
I left the one on my 95 PU on and it had a dead battery. But it was a different type. it had a switch and was on a little cord reel. I will check that. My 2003 PU and Sky don't have them Nor dose Michelle's Malibu so I kind was not real worried about it. Would be nice to have it work though.

As above - it goes out when the hood is lowered.
Trouble is when you leave the hood open for a show.
The original bulb draws 1.1 amps - that's a fair amount to draw for 10-15 minutes. Then, open the back for an adult beverage and the cycle starts all over again!
I upgraded mine to an LED replacement.
Now...it draws 0.1 amps, and doesn't impact the battery so there's no need to disconnect or disable it!
Besides, the brighter white light of the LED makes the engine detail look great!!
