exide battery question
i bought a z about a year and a half ago and today when i was washing it i looked at the battery and wondered if it was an amg battery. and before i get a wise crack no this is not the 1st time that i have looked at the battery . i looked at the exide web site but didn't see what i was looking for. so does anyone here know if an exide select battery is an amg tpye battery? better to ask before i problem comes up. thanks
The Exide Orbital is agm (absorbed glass mat) technology. I have the
75DT-84 Exide Orbital in my '02 and have not had any electrical problems. See here for more details on construction. http://bestbatterytips.com/tags/orbital-battery-review/

Orbital is the only AGM type battery built by Exide and with any AGM battery types any total battery drain can lead to a failing battery. If these batteries are not started on a regular basis or given a trickle charge they will fail.
I've had the Dekka AGM for about 5 years now. Never had a charger on it but I do drive it about once a week, weather permitting.
Rats, probably dead as hell since I said that.

The specs on the Exide Orbital ORB75DT-108 Sealed VRLA (AGM) Automotive Battery are 750CCA/850 CA - RESERVE MIN =80
The specs on the Exide Orbital ORB78DT-108 Sealed VRLA (AGM) Automotive Battery are 800CCA/950 CA - RESERVE MIN =95
I think that the Exide Orbital ORB75DT-108 would be a better choice.
A lot of people on the Forum also use the Optima Red Top which has Reserve Minutes of only 90.
The minimum required Reserve Minutes for the C5 is 120.
None of the AGM batterries meet the required Res Mins for the Corvette and that is why they need constant charging through constant use, or for the ocassional driver, constant use of a Battery Tender, CTEK or other....

I realize that people buy the AGM's because they are afraid of acid leaking onto the computer and wiring beneath the battery ever since the dreaded 1997-2000 OEM AC Delco batteries which had a tendency to leak from the positive terminal. I haven't noticed leaky batterry threads in many years, ever since AC Delco addressed the issue with stronger cases. I haven't noticed complaints of any other brands leaking either. I guess it's up to the individual which is more important, 120 minimum Reserve Minutes or having the security of an AGM Battery.
The optima red top only has 100 res min.
The optima yellow top has 120 res min but it is a deep cycle like a marine battery.
My Dekka Ultimate AGM has 115 min res & again never a problem in 5 years.
We talk about this so often, I'm sure everyone has their own favorite battery and all have their war stories about batteries, I have a Otima Red Top which I think is a AGM, but I put it on trickle or float charger if It's not going to be run for awhile. I don't know how long you can let it sit without a charger hooked up, I know the C5 has a 20Ma constant drain on it. But 20 Ma is really so close to nothing, But why take a chance. Whatever, it's worked for me for all these years, why rock the boat now ! Hay, Maybe Lindsay Lohan will call looking for someone who'll listen to her troubles ? Maybe not ?
I had an Exide Orbital in my 1998 C5. It did not last the warranty period, and SAMS CLUB stopped carrying the battery. I got a lot of money back. Although my car is a daily driver (except for rain days and weekends away), I did NOT use a Battery Tender on it at all and I think that lead to it's demise.
I now have a Optima Red Top in the car and I use a Battery Tender whenever it sits for 3 days or more. No problems.
