Default Radio replacement

I own an 04 Z06, and am considering replacing the Bose radio with an aftermarket that has navigation. Is there a popular unit that everyone seems to agree on as a replacement ??

Also, some people say that they have a double din in their car. What happens to the HVAC control unit ??

Any assistance is appreciated.

There are several that have a flip up Nav screen that comes out from the dash unit. Pioneer, Clarion, Jensen and Dual make one. Can't recommend any of them. I've looked at buying one but haven't.

As for the HVAC question, I've seen it done two ways; one they just swap the radio and HVAC so that when the screen flips up, it doesn't block the A/C vent at the top.

In the second case, they're using a unit with a permanent screen (rather than a flip up). They swap the two and then cut out the ashtray section at the bottom.

Here's a link to everything you ever want to know, probably MORE than you want to know. Look at post #3 for info on modifying the console bezel.

You will want to contact Dennis at DD Mods. http://www.doubledmods.com/ He is the man to steer you in the right direction for what you are looking for. He did a great job on my bezel. I choose to get rid of the ash tray on my converion, which means I had to move the AC controls down about an 1". Was really no big deal. You can also leave the ash tray unit there and it moves the radio up, which makes the upper piece of the bezel very thin. I choose the Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD just because I think it has the best Ipod setup and if I wanted to up grade it to a navigation unit, it is very easy to do. Kenwood makes the best navigation systems out there. They us the Garmin for its' navigation which is rated one of the best. As for installing the unit it will take you a few hours, most of it just getting the radio lined up right in the Bezel.

Here's am executive summary of how double din can be done... at least this is how mine was done...

1) Factory OEM bezel is removed
2) HVAC unit and OEM Bose head unit is removed
3) The frame that holds the radio will need to be modified. In particular, there is a shelf that supports OEM factory radio. It will need to be removed and then "rolled over". This process involves tedious drilling out of rivets that supports the shelf. There are metal tabs in the rear that will also have to be removed or folded back. A plastic wire support in the rear will need to be snipped out. These changes are done so the head unit will slide all the way back.
4) With the above changes, you can slide down HVAC control.
5) The final part is re-alligning the double din head unit and the HVAC so the bezel properly fits. This part can be very tricky.

There are several options for hookup which the OP didn't ask about. You could go with OEM integration box to keep factory speakers or go all out with aftermarket power amps, sub, speakers.

As others pointed, talk to Dennis at Double Din Mods. He's the authority.
