Default Z06 windshield replacement

I know the Z06 windshield has been discussed here before but, I have a question anyway.
Yesterday I was on a long trip and was the unlucky recipient of a nice rock chip. This makes my third chip and I fear that I am due to replace the windshield.
My questions are as follows:
  1. Is it worth it to spend the extra money on the Z06 specific glass?
  2. Is the standard Corvette glass more durable due to the added thickness?
  3. Can anyone recommend a glass installer in the Southern New Jersey area to perform this service? I don't want just anyone to do the work as I have heard horror stories of leaks and "Bubbas" learning on someone's Corvette.

Sometimes it's the "Bubbas" that really know their craft. My windshield guy is right out of "Deliverance"! LOL

U don't have to put the zo6 specific. Glass back in if that lil amount of weight savings matters to u..the next thing u need to consider is if u want the hud glass or the non ..I have heard it does not matter either way and we have people come into our shop that ask for the non hud glass...

If the glass can be repaired, I understand Safelite does good work. They also come to house or job.

If you're having your insurance company pay for it, just get the correct windshield. You're not going to pay any more than your deductible anyway, so do it right. In NJ, glass insurance repairs do not affect your insurance rates going up, so if your damage was an act of god, such as a flying rock hitting it, you will be covered. I had a large rock come off a truck's tire which really hit my glass hard. Two guys came to my house and replaced it while working in my garage. I guess they appreciated having a heated garage in winter to do the job. Anyway, they did a great job. You cannot tell it was replaced, the glass is OEM, and it doesn't leak. The best part, it only cost me $100 out of pocket.

Thanks for the information; I guess I should check to see if windshields are covered under my policy.

Geez I hope so; I recall seeing a post a while back stating that it can cost in the neighborhood of $1,800 to replace with factory Z06 specific glass.

When my HUD windshield had to be replaced - went with the standard glass. Never looked back- the HUD works fine. Saved a lot of money

Insurance will be the deciding factor. Even if youre like me with a $500. deductable, youre still gaong to be waaay ahead of the game. Id get the correct thickness and HUD glass if it were mine.

I went through this about 6 mnths ago. The thin Zo6 glass is not available from GM anymore. They send and sent the stock HUD glass as that is whats available. Some companies did stock up on it before it was unavailable but the wouldn't ship it long distance. Then I found out it was a VERY small weight savings like 4 lbs if I remember. It didn't matter to me and I gave up going w/ the stock HUD. 30 yrs from now when I don't own the car and its at a car show, it will lose points!!! LOL

The glass you get from GM may or may not be the same glass as you have now. The part numbers are different and they say it is the proper glass. I went through this a couple of years ago. The big issue isn't the glass part number. The big issue is getting the job done correctly. When they pull the windshield out they have to remove the door weatherstrip and the parts that go under it. If not installed correctly you will get some pretty bad leaks. It took a year plus another windshield install and all new weather strip and trim to get it done correctly. Luckily, I had full glass coverage so State Farm covered everything and collected some money from the first shop that screwed everything up.

If your windshield is just chipped and not cracked get it to somebody who repairs chips and avoid all of the potential issues. Your insurance will probably cover the chip repair and will definitely cover a replacement.

This. The shop screwed mine up when i had $6000 worth of damage from a hail storm that came through. BOTH windshields had to be replaced. Infact the glass was half of that cost. Thank you USAA

AS an FYI, the Z06 glass with the HUD is a 4.8cm thickness and those measurements are stamped on the bottom corner of the glass. The GM part number for that glass is 10315114 and should run dealer cost at $807 (discounted around $564). Just had one replaced last summer in my Z.
