fuel

(even though I can offer no empirical data of the differences between any one brand name and or an other) I guess I am just a dum bass

This question is as stupid as; "what is the best oil?", "What are the best tires?", "What anti-freeze should I use?", so on and so forth.

I suggest sticking with top-tier brands (Shell, Chevron, 76, etc. see info and full list of top-tier retailers at www.toptiergas.com). Despite my heavy stock position in one of these firms, I would also recommend rotating formulas (brands) periodically to take advantage of the different detergent mixes among the different brands. They all have their own formulas and those formulas deal with carbon and other deposits differently.
Sure, you can use Arco, Rotton Robbie, Valero, Costco, your local guy, etc. and occasionally, they are just buying from one of the top tier brands and not marking up as much. There have also been regulatory violations and fines resulting from some of these lower cost, usually lower quality gasses having higher "filler" content than are allowable under CA standards. This means that you're paying a bit less per gallon dispensed, but each gallon may have less fuel/combustion content, so in total, it may cost you more. When it happens, they find that this "filler" is added by the wholesaler/retailer, not the refinery (who are much more closely regulated).
