New steering rack?
Does anyone actually sell factory-new steering racks? I almost ordered a rack from GM Parts Direct but then I noticed the small print that their $900 rack is reman. Remanufacturing seems to be mostly just new O-rings, cheap bellows and some spray paint. If the core rack had play coming in, it'll have play when they sell it. Or is anyone actually machining the rack and the pinion splines?

If that is truly all they are doing on the reman'd units, you would be better off finding a low miles part-out to pull one out of.

Give Gene at gmpartshouse.com a call and see if the ones he can get are remanufactured. If so and you don't want to go that route again, looking for a low mileage used one may in fact be your best bet.

I was planning to do just that (contact Gene). My original rack was low mileage when I got the car (39000) and it was crap, so a used rack is not my first choice. I adjusted the pretension in my reman rack as tight as I dared today and it'll do for a few weeks. I just hate any play in steering.
