So, my driver side window started grinding and look it up here and found out that it's the motor might be going bad. I figured I'll keep it up and try to fix it during my spring vacation. A few weeks later, the passenger side began to grind also. Now both windows are up. After a couple of months, the driver side won't go down and did the hit it a few times trick and it worked. Yesterday, I accidentally hit the express button by mistake and the window lowered all the way down. Dreading the grinding noise, I push the up button and guess what? No grinding noise. Tried it a few more times and it seems the driver side fixed itself unless the corvette gnomes came over last night and fixed it! Sadly, the passenger side still grinds. Did the pounding fixed it?
The grinding you hear is the frayed window lifting/lowering cable trying to go through the window motor. At some point this will cause your window to get stuck. You will need to replace the entire regulator assembly which includes:
Motor
Track
Cable Connections.
The swap takes about 30 min to 1 hour per door including window adjustment on the new tracks.
its possible to rebuild the regulator, but maybe a bit more effort than what its worth.
Had the same problem with my 04 few months ago. Took the reg out and pulled the motor cover off. The inside was FULL of carbon dust from the brushes. Cleaned it out with WD-40 and blew it dry and now it works. Look at how much wear is left on the brushes to detemine if its worth putting back or buying a new one. Had no problems with the cables or pullies wearing or fraying, but lubed them before reinstalling with the extra lube still on them.

Just had my driver's' side regulator replaced yesterday. Mine was doing the same as yours. I had the local dealership install/adjust new one. I tore off the panel prior to my arrival there. They charged me 60 bucks for the labor, which I thought was fair. The OE part was $157.00. If/when the passenger side goes out, I might try the install myself. Good Luck.
The window regulator is an assembly which includes the motor. Most likely you've got a steel cable strand had broken off and hitting something along the path of travel. From what I saw when I replaced mine, it would be a difficult job to manually replace the cable in the regulator itself. I just replaced the whole assembly and adjusted within minutes.
