Default Airbox straps/levers

Anyone ever had trouble keeping the straps / levers, that keep the lid on the airbox tight, down. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they keep popping off.

Advice?

I think if you read my post (K&N air filter) there is some mention about the rubber gasket seals the filter and tightens up the air box so the straps stay tight and not pop off.

You can re bend the hook end to tighten them up. They get stretched over time

The hooked end is probably not attached to the correct point on the assembly. And/or a previous owner chose not to attach it correctly when it came loose for them. Don't short cut it with additional bends or duct tape or sheet metal screws as has been suggested in the past. The metal bands do not stretch over the plastic assembly. The hooked ends may need to be bent slightly to secure them. Attach it correctly and it should stay latched tightly.

As mentioned above, if you're using a K&N filter and the rubber seal isn't in place, that can also contribute to the problem.

The complete removal of the assembly will make it easier to re-attach and assess what needs to be done.

My right one pops open all the time too. Can't seem to get it to stay down for more than a couple of days.

I have had the same problem! I suspect that when the engine is throttled up the box has such a high vaccumn in it the the cover is drawn down to the point that the clamps are actually lose and vibrate open, one or both clamps, in my case is is always the same one. I did the bend job on it and it hasn't happened since.

The only way to fix it is to pull the box out and re-position the straps correctly. I believe that the strap is most likely coming loose on the bottom of the box causing it to not sit properly on top. Sorry for the vague description. I think it will be obvious when you take the box out. Best of luck!

It's not hard to pull the box and just reattach everything the RIGHT way.

Zip ties and duct tape on a Corvette? really? I expect as much on the 1986 Honda that someone's just trying to keep on the road for basic transport - not here, please not here.
