Default Parking brake question???

My parking brake doesn't seem to work as good as it used to. I have to pull it all the way to the last notch and even then it sqeaks before it get the full grip.
I took it to the dealer and he called me back saying that it is out of warranty since my car is over 17000 miles. I was wondering if the adjustment is not considered as normal wear and tear then the warranty should be 3 yrs 36k miles.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanx in advance

I only have 6,000 miles on my 01, but it is doing the same thing. I was going to take try to adjust it myself this weekend or take it in.

I don't understand the 17K statement  Is this another one of our "top notch" Chevy dealers? We have plenty of winners in Houston :(

Actually the service manager is a nice guy and he has done few thing out of his way. I still dont understand the 17000 mile warranty part may be I would ask him again. I asked him how much if I pay out of my pocket and he told me its not worth it since its 2-3 hours job. they have to take out the rear brakes or the parking brakes to adjust it. He suggested to wait till I need a brake job.

Is the parking brake usually that lousy on these cars????

Hi z06rules -

Here it is from the manual...

Park Brake Adjustment
Tools Required
J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge

Important
Park brake adjustment is not necessary after replacing the park brake lever or park brake cables. The park brake cables are tensioned automatically by cycling the park brake lever three times.

Apply and fully release the parking brake three times.
Verify that the parking brake lever releases completely.
Turn ON the ignition. Verify that the red BRAKE warning indicator lamp is off.
Turn OFF the ignition.
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

Important
Do not operate the park brake lever with the rear disc brake rotor removed.

Remove the rear disc brake rotors. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear in Disc Brakes.

Place the inside measurement contacts of the J 21177-A at the widest point of the drum portion of the brake rotor (1).
Tighten the set screw on the tool in order to ensure the proper measurement when removing the tool from the drum.

Position the outside measurement contacts of the J 21177-A over the park brake shoe (1) at the widest point.

Important
If the gap between the adjuster nut and the adjuster screw exceeds 5 mm (0.25 in) during the adjustment procedure, the park brake shoe must be replaced.

Adjust the park brake shoe-to-drum clearance by rotating the adjustment nut on the park brake actuator. Specification
0.38 mm (0.015 in)

Install the rear brake rotors. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear in Disc Brakes.
Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
Apply and release the park brake lever three times .
Apply the park brake lever. Inspect the rotation of the rear wheels:
The wheels should not rotate forward.
The wheels should drag or not rotate rearward.
If the rear tire and wheel assemblies rotate forward or do not exhibit drag rearward, repeat the adjustment procedure.
Release the parking lever. Verify that the wheels rotate freely
Lower the vehicle

'Ya need a tool that looks like a combination inside/outside caliper - your rear disc rotors have a drum portion that the parking brake works on - that was news to me - maybe the Z06 has high-performance parking brake material that wears quickly...

best regards -

ROTFLMAO .. The Z06 is the fastest-parking Corvette ever made .. the brake can be set even faster than on a ZR1 ..

Also .. dare I say ... what a PITA to go thru to adjust a parking brake! You'd think they could have accomplished this is a simpler fashion .. like maybe a cable-tensioner ..
