I would like to get your opinion on my future mods.
I have a '97 A4 with 30k DD.
I am definitely getting American racing headers, vararam, and dyno tune done soon.
I would also like to do one of these two options at the same time. I am just wondering which one you all think would be best now and 1 1/2 years or so from now do the second option.
So my two options are;
1. Complete mild cam package which includes springs, retainers, valve seals, oil pump, chain, ud pulley, etc.
2. 3.42 or 3.73 gears with a stall converter.
So let me know what you think and why.
Thanks for your input.
my personal opinion would be to take door number 1 monty, lol. the cam etc will be a nice addition to the other (headers, etc) work being done and will be a nice in itself until you lower the rear ratio.

I would go the grar set-up first if you are running the 2.73 gears, If you are running 3.15 gears already the 3.42 gears you will hardly notice the difference versus the cost.
If you put in a stall it will really help the car launch from a stop. But with a stall at highway speeds it takes a little bit of time to get going on a down shift. Engine ramps up, trans kicks in/downshifts then you start accelerating.
You will probably need a tune after install to adjust the torque management.

Do the #2 option - 3.42 gears and a 2800-3200 stall (I run a YANK SS3200)
Do not do 3.73's with the A4 you will be buzzing the RPM's way too much.
Here is a nice chart to see the diff. in gears RPM vs MPH:
