Default Code Reader

I'm a pretty good part time mechanic but never got around to buying a code reader. DD 2005 Avalanche just threw a DIC message "Tighten Fuel Cap" and the check engine light is on. Between it and the '99 FRC I probably need to invest in a code reader for OBDII. Any suggestions from you guys out there? They seem to run from $70-200, but I would think I need something simple that can just read the codes and clear them???? And yes, I'm buying a new fuel cap.

No-I primarily use the computer at work, and my wife's antique at home.

The problem is the cheapy code (like Actron) readers only read the GENERIC OBD codes (engine control), the vendor specific stuff like ABS/HVAC/BCM don't get read. If you had a Laptop there is decent software for $2-300 that will get you into everything.

OK-if I go cheap Actron, others? When it comes to more complicated stuff (I used to fool with BMWs with multiplexed electrical systems), I rely on my network of PROFESSIONAL mechanic friends.

why not get the codes directly from the DIC and then use the DIC to reset them? That isnt going to cost you anything. You can write the codes down and look them up here on the forum. The procedures to get all the active and history codes from the DIC are also on this forum.

For the moment this is for the '05 Avalanche. Don't know if you can pull the codes for that one. HMMMM!?

With the Vette, you can read the codes without anything.

Default I got one on Fleebay to read codes on my Montana - CAUSED CODES on the Montana and C5

Got one for around $40 on Fleebay to shoot a problem on my Montana.
Not only did it not pull codes on the Montana it created about a dozen codes on the C5. Pulled them from the DIC. Got my money back and forgot about el cheapo code readers.

You can't get ALL the codes or any of the I/M monitor status from the DIC-the I/M's are where most people fail emission testing.

Ended up buying an Actron AutoScanner CP9575 from Sears for $120. Does OBDII and CAN and shows the code AND what it is, among other things. I can also cross reference the code in my Helm manual where they are listed in numerical order with reference to the repair procedure. The Avalanche issue was a purge valve in the gas tank evacuation system--$20.00 part at a discount. With no dealer labor the scanner is "paid for". Worthwhile investment. Thanks for all the inputs.
