good luck...
if you are comfortable working on the car at all that unit is fairly simple to take apart. you can probably use contact cleaner on the board if there's any mess there and a variety of cleaning methods on the unit and buttons. as for the lights not functioning LEDs are a good option, but I'd point you in the same direction mtndv8. what happens if the ebay guy sends you the unit back and it still doesn't work because there's some other reason for the bulbs not working than the bulbs themselves? if JW takes care of it he'll have your back if it doesn't work. of course he'll test it first anyway...

Like all the good folks that have helped me from these boards,
I would be happy to walk you through step by step.
Once you realize how simple it really is, you'll be changing LED's everywhere, and while your in there you can make the temperature read VERY bright with a little quick, handy work and ZERO dollars.
Let me know if you need assistance.
I'll tell you what to buy and walk you through the entire process.
You need cheap LED's with resistors (I bought 100 led's with resistors for under 10 bucks on e-bay) and of course a nice big roll of solder.

The whole job will take you a few hours because it is your first time.

It really does come out easey. May want to just take it out, open it and clean the boards off with some spray contact cleaner), plug it back in (dont need to put everything back together to just see if it works) and see if you get anything out of it. Then if some lights are blown, decide if you want to replace those yourself or have someone else do it.

Don't let anyone tell you its easy.
If you understand how to ohm out a circuit then you should be ok doing this.
MANY people have fried there HVAC, and or Radio trying this.
It took me about 20 hours to do my entire interior. You have to have a LOT of patience to say the least.

I took it on as a challenge for myself and it turned out very well (luckily)...
