OK, my rule of thumb is always the newest I can afford with the least miles on it.
I'm preparing for my hunt for a C5 / Z06 (1st option) or Convertible in the $25k price range, it looks like a 2002 will be @ the most I can afford.
Any advice on years or options to avoid or stay away from?
The plan is to sell or trade off my 500hp/C4, take that cash and put cash with it for a $10-$12k down payment. I don't plan on modding it, those years are behind me now, Wheels and a Cat back is all I think I would do in terms of mods.
You have it just about right, lowest miles news model in your price range. In 2001 GM did the most refinements to the C5 so seeing you are looking for a Z06, you will be 2001 and newer. If you end up with a roadster, than again go 2001 or newer so you will get all the enhancements.
Ok so mosd are behind you, I don't think so. You want different wheels and exhaust that is the start. Good luck and post up some pictures once you find the one you want.

OK, I'm Busted the plan would be to go with a Supercharger once it is paid off...
Sounds like you've got it down! Good luck in your search.
To be blunt there is not a heck of a lot of difference in any of the C5's...
I honestly would NOT pay a lot af attention to what year the car was but rather on how many miles the car has on it, and how it was stored and driven...
Corvettes usually are not everyday drivers and most of them are not driven very many miles in any given year...
I purchased my 98 sp Z51 Conv new in 98-99 now has all of 26000 on her clock not a scratch anywhere Added 2000 wheels, Street Legal performance ZL-5 bolt on stuff and Exhaust on the car etc...
THIS is the NORM for a lot of C5's and C6';s for that matter ... so there are plenty of low mileage well maintained Corvettes out there,....
and they really do not sell for any premium...

I would emphasize miles over year as well. Sure there are suttle changes throughout the 97 to 04 lifespan, but they are just that - "suttle".
