Default Mystery Cover

What is the purpose of the 6" wide x 4" tall x 1" deep plastic cover above each the seat belt anchors? I have a belt bar but you can see the pass side one in this photo.

This gets asked frequently. I honestly cannot remember what the general assumption for its purpose was. Maybe some type of head protection?

If you really need a more definitive answer, send a PM to former C5 engineer "Evil-Twin"...
