Default MPH light

Fairly new to my 2000 FRC. I noticed that the MPH light in the speedometer fluctuates in brightness with lights off.
What would cause this?

Mine does the same.. Don't know why...

I even replace the instrument cluster and it still does it occasionally..

I've heard it changes with changes to the ambient light sensor on the dash. Put you hand over the sensor and notice how the mph dims.

The light sensor is the small hole just above the fuel button that selects the DIC display. Put your finger over it in the daylight and you'll see the "mph" dim, or shine a flashlight on it and you'll see the "mph" brighten.
